Nayef Aguerd: West Ham close to completing £30m deal to sign Rennes defender

Nayef Aguerd scored five goals and made three assists in 66 league matches with Rennes West Ham are close to the £30m signing of defender Nayef Aguerd from Rennes. Aguerd, 26, has been identified by manager David Moyes as the next piece in his plan to make West Ham genuine challengers for a top-six spot. The Morocco player made 66 league appearances for French side Rennes after joining from Dijon in 2020. In a farewell post to fans on social media, Aguerd said it was a "difficult decision" to leave Rennes as he had enjoyed "exceptional times" there. Aguerd, who has 25 caps for Morocco, was an ever-present in his country's run to the last eight of the Africa Cup of Nations last season. He also played in both play-off matches against Congo as Morocco reached the World Cup in Qatar. It is understood Aguerd is likely to have a medical with West Ham on Monday. If the deal goes through, he will become West Ham's fourth-highest transfer, behind Sebastien Haller, Felipe Anderson and Kurt Zouma.

West Ham transfer news: First summer signing to be announced on Monday, with paperwork complete for Nayef Aguerd

Nayef Aguerd and Flavien Tait celebrate for Rennes Credit: PA Images West Ham will announce the signing of Nayef Aguerd on Monday after completing the paperwork for his transfer from Rennes, it has been claimed. Aguerd has been West Ham’s top priority in terms of their hunt for a new centre-back this summer. An ACL injury to Angelo Ogbonna last season exposed a lack of depth in the position. Now, Aguerd will be arriving to help provide balance to their backline. They have encountered various obstacles along the way, but seem to have arrived at the desired outcome. According to transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano, Aguerd is joining West Ham after all the relevant paperwork was filled out, including his signature on the contract. The length of that deal is not yet disclosed. West Ham will pay £30m for the Morocco international, who will provide competition for the likes of Kurt Zouma, Craig Dawson and Issa Diop, depending on who stays. Romano reveals that West Ham will confirm the signing of Aguerd at the start of the week. Their announcement will be released on Monday. Aguerd will subsequently become their first signing of the summer. It will be interesting to see who follows; there is still a need for the Hammers to strengthen at the other end of the pitch, while left-back seems to be an area they could consider reinforcing too. For now, though, they have at least had a proactive start to the window in one aspect. Rennes star Nayef Aguerd Credit: PA Images The signing of Aguerd should give West Ham some useful European experience ahead of the new season. The Hammers did well in the Europa League last season, reaching the semi-final. This term, they will be in the Europa Conference League. Aguerd played in that competition for Rennes last season, and the Champions League the terms before. At the age of 26, he has some useful experience to bring to West Ham. Whether his lack of a Premier League past could hinder him, only time will tell.
