Calvin Ramsay: Liverpool sign Aberdeen right-back Calvin Ramsay for £6.5 million
The 18-year-old right-back was identified by Liverpool as a long-term rival for Trent Alexander-Arnold; Aberdeen will receive a club-record £6.5m fee for the talented defender; Ramsay was named SFWA Young Player of the Year this season.
Aberdeen right-back Calvin Ramsay has joined Liverpool for £6.5 million.
Liverpool will pay an initial £4 million, with an additional £2.5 million in add-ons.
The 18-year-old recently traveled to Liverpool to finalize personal terms and to undergo a medical examination. The defender has agreed to terms with Liverpool on a five-year contract and will join Jurgen Klopp's squad for pre-season. Liverpool has no intention of loaning Ramsay out.
"I'm just buzzing, and it's like a dream come true." the defender told Liverpool's official website after completing his move.
"Playing for Aberdeen was a dream come true, and now to be at one of the biggest, if not the biggest, club in the world is a massive achievement, and I'm looking forward to showing the fans what I've got." Hopefully, I'll be able to come in during pre-season and show everyone at the club, including the staff and players, what I'm capable of, and then we'll see what happens from there."
Ramsay made his debut for Aberdeen in 2020/21, appearing in 33 games and scoring one goal and registering nine assists across all competitions.
His performances earned him the SFWA Young Player of the Year Award, and he also has Europa Conference League and U21 international experience.
Liverpool had been in talks with the Dons over the defender after making an initial £4 million bid, with a further £2 million in add-ons.
Aberdeen, on the other hand, is said to have wanted at least £5 million up front, with another £5 million in add-ons.
Liverpool have identified Ramsay as a long-term right-back rival for England's Trent Alexander-Arnold, a player Ramsay has cited as a major influence.
"As a full back, watching Trent and his crosses and technical ability - if I can get to that level, it would be a bonus," he explained.
"Andy Robertson at Liverpool and (Kieran) Tierney at Arsenal have been fantastic, and they're players I look up to, especially because we're both full-backs." I believe I am capable of doing so.
During the season, Dons manager Jim Goodwin expressed his surprise at the growing interest in the teenager.
He said: "To be honest, Calvin was probably one of the best young full-backs in the world prior to January. This is not an exaggeration." His stats and data in terms of attacking numbers and crossing into the box were incredible.
"He had a slight lapse in form. Whether that was because his mind was on whether he was moving or not moving in January."
