‘It’s a dream come true’: Calvin Ramsay completes Liverpool transfer
Liverpool have completed the signing of the Scotland Under-21 defender Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen, subject to international clearance. The 18-year-old joins the Premier League club on a “long-term contract” in a deal believed to be worth an initial £4m, with another £2.5m in potential add-ons. “I’m just buzzing and it’s a dream come true really to be here,” said Ramsay. “It was a dream come true to play for Aberdeen, and now to be at one of the biggest, if not the biggest club in the world, it’s a massive achievement and I’m looking forward to trying to show the fans what I’ve got.” Ramsay was named the Scottish Football Writers’ Association’s Young Player of the Year for the 2021-22 season, in addition to being shortlisted for the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year award. The right-back progressed through the youth ranks at Aberdeen, making his senior debut in March 2021 and playing 39 times, scoring once. He is Jürgen Klopp’s third signing of the summer following the arrival of Darwin Núñez from Benfica and the announcement that Fábio Carvalho will officially join the club from Fulham on 1 July. “There’s obviously a pathway here – that’s one of the reasons I chose it as well,” added Ramsay, who has been capped three times by his country at under-21 level. “It’s not just a massive club, they give young players chances in the first team. So if I can come in in pre-season, put my mark down, then there’s no reason why I can’t push to get in the first-team squad.” Ramsay’s departure is a record sale for the Scottish Premiership club, surpassing the reported £3m fee they received in September 2020 when Scott McKenna moved to Nottingham Forest. “Liverpool are very lucky, they are getting a promising young talent,” said Aberdeen’s manager, Jim Goodwin. “His stats in the first half of last season were amongst the top for full-backs in the world. We certainly had high hopes for him and I’ve no doubt he will go from strength to strength in a very good team at Liverpool.”
Liverpool complete £8m signing of Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen
Liverpool have completed the signing of right-back Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen. The Athletic understands that the deal is worth an initial fee of around £5 million, with a potential £3 million of add-ons. “I’m just buzzing and it’s a dream come true really to be here,” said Ramsay, who has signed a long-term contract at Anfield. “It was a dream come true to play for Aberdeen, and now to be at one of the biggest, if not the biggest club in the world, it’s a massive achievement and I’m looking forward to trying to show the fans what I’ve got. “Hopefully I can come in in pre-season, show everyone at the club, the staff, players what I’ve got and then we’ll see what happens from there.” The 18-year-old has impressed in the Scottish Premiership this season, with Aberdeen manager Jim Goodwin calling him “one of the best young full-backs in the world”. Leeds United were also interested in the youngster, along with relegated Watford and Italian side Sassuolo. Ramsay is Liverpool’s third signing of the summer. Attacking midfielder Fabio Carvalho has joined from Fulham, while Darwin Nunez’s signing was confirmed on Tuesday for an initial fee of £64 million. Klopp is understood to have approved the pursuit of Ramsay very quickly when the idea was presented to him, with the Scot thought of a potential long-term rival to Trent Alexander-Arnold. He made 33 appearances for Aberdeen across all competitions in 2021-22, scoring once and providing nine assists.
