Report: Liverpool now readying new contract for their £41m star, after Joe Gomez and Naby Keita

Liverpool are looking to tie Diogo Jota to a new deal this summer, after concluding their incoming business. That’s according to The Mirror. They claim that Liverpool’s new sporting director Julian Ward is now set to concentrate on ‘securing the future’ of Jota. As well as the Portuguese forward, Ward will look to finalise extensions for Harvey Elliott, Joe Gomez and Naby Keita. Of the four, it’s claimed that Gomez will be the most ‘problematic.’ The centre-back is reportedly keen for more game-time in the hope of claiming a place in England’s World Cup squad. Keita aside, they aren’t players who are running out of time on their deals. Liverpool do have a couple of those in the shape of Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino. Both are heading heading into the last agreed year and should be the priority for The Reds. Maguire Makes The MOST Overpriced Premier League XI Despite this, renewing Elliott at this stage makes some kind of sense. The 19-year-old is far from a first-team regular but his status in the squad is far higher than it was upon signing in 2019. Elliott does still have four years to run on his deal, but it’s prudent to make sure he’s on good terms before his star shines even brighter. Photo by Catherine Ivill/Getty Images Jota, too, is very much deserving of having his good form rewarded. He has three years to go on the contract he signed after his £41m transfer from Wolves. But he has shown more than enough to bump himself into a higher bracket. Keita is the most pressing and probably did just about enough to warrant an extension last season. It will be fascinating to see the kind of length of deal on offer to the Guinean, who still hasn’t fully convinced during his time at Liverpool. The Gomez conundrum Finally, Gomez is the most interesting of all. The 25-year-old barely played any meaningful games in 2021/22 and Liverpool could reasonably expect to command a big fee if they sold him this summer. Photo by Harriet Lander/Copa/Getty Images With an expiry date of 2024, it’s probably the right time to discuss a renewal for Gomez. But he looks unlikely to be first choice again next season. Perhaps Liverpool are offering Gomez the new deal as something of an insurance policy. If he rejects it, now is probably the time to sell, if he accepts, there’s still time for him to come good on his immense potential at Anfield. If not, his value is protected and he can be moved along at a later date. No more incoming business is expected for Liverpool, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t still plenty on Ward’s plate.
