On Saturday, flooding inundated more than 700 homes in several villages around the Central Region.
A few bridges and highways were also damaged, rendering the transportation system inaccessible.
The bridge over the River Surowi at Jukwa on the Cape Coast-TwifoPraso route; Jukwais in the Hemang Lower Denkyira District is one of these bridges.
A jail guard was washed away by the flood while attempting to aid someone in wading through the flood waters.
The floods were caused by severe rains in the area, which caused the Kakum and Surowi rivers to overflow their banks.
Over 50 mud dwellings were damaged by floodwaters in Simiw, in the Komenda-Edina-Egyuafo-Abrem (KEEA) municipality.
The displaced were being accommodated in schools and churches, or with friends and family. Simiw, Nkontrodo, Ntranoa, Abina, Atonkwa, and Ankaful in the Elmina Municipality, as well as Amamoma and Kwaprow in the Cape Coast Metropolis, are some of the places impacted.
The residence of Exim Bank's Chief Executive Officer, just a few meters from the bridge, was inundated, and his vehicles were drowned by the surging water.
The rains flooded the Prisons Quarters in Ankaful, and the frantic officials who were there screamed for rescue.
Eric Nana Agyemang-Prempeh, the Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), toured some of the damaged towns alongside officials from the organization.
Mrs. Justina Marigold Assan, the Central Regional Minister, Dr. Nana Ato Arthur, the Head of Local Governance Service, and officials from the KEEA Municipal Assembly were also in his company.
Mr. Agyemang-Prempeh said the floods and its consequences were terrible in his remarks following the visit.
He stated that the floods in the region were not caused by humans and urged residents to take preventive precautions.
He advised Ghanaians to practice good cleanliness by avoiding dumping trash into drains, particularly gutters.
He stated that the country could expect additional rain in the coming days, and that safeguards should be taken.
Mr. Agyemang-Prempeh urged residents in flood-prone districts to relocate to safer locations.
Later, he gave some flood relief materials to individuals who had been afflicted by the flooding.
Mrs. Justina Marigold Assan, the Central Regional Minister, stated in her speech that the situation was quite challenging.
She thanked NADMO for their prompt reaction in caring for the displaced citizens of the afflicted towns.
In the meanwhile, the Jukwa bridge is being restored.
A contractor and his crew were seen frantically fixing the bridge to guarantee traffic passage on that section of road by Ghanaian Times.
The Ghana Highway Authority issued a statement on Saturday advising motorists and commuters traveling from Twifo to Cape Coast to take alternate routes such as the Cape Coast-Yamoransa-AssinFosu-TwifoPraso roads.
No cars were stuck at the site of the damaged bridge due to traffic being redirected or reversed, thanks to statements made by citizens in the surrounding areas.
