As Manchester United advance a £40 million transfer, Antony has sent a powerful signal to Erik ten Hag.
Man Utd are reportedly intensifying their pursuit of Antony, and a move to Old Trafford might reunite him with his former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag.
Manchester United's pursuit of Antony could bring the winger's promise to Erik ten Hag after his departure from Ajax to fruition.
United officials are said to have flown to Amsterdam to finalize a £40 million deal for Antony. If the deal is completed, the 22-year-old winger will become Old Trafford's first signing of the Ten Hag era.
Antony drew the attention of several major European clubs last season after contributing 12 goals and eight assists in 33 appearances across all competitions. The Brazilian was a key figure in Ajax's Eredivisie title triumph and had a good working relationship with his manager.
Ten Hag signed Antony from Sao Paulo on a five-year contract in February 2020 for an initial fee of £13 million and helped him develop his game. Antony was saddened to see his mentor leave Amsterdam for United at the end of the 2021/22 season, and he sent his manager a video message upon his departure.
"I want to wish you the best of luck with your new club," he said. "I'd also like to express my gratitude for everything you've taught me. Every day, I am grateful for the opportunities to learn and grow. Know that if you need me, I will always be there for you."
That ominous last line now appears to be coming true, with Ten Hag eager to make Antony the first signing of the summer at United. Antony following his manager to the Premier League has long been discussed, and it is an exciting prospect for United fans.
Antony has 22 goals and 20 assists in 78 Ajax appearances and will strengthen a position that has become somewhat of a problem position for the club in recent years. For a long time, United supporters have been concerned about the right wing. The £73 million signing of Jadon Sancho last summer has yet to bear fruit, with Anthony Elanga, Marcus Rashford, and Mason Greenwood frequently filling in out of position under Ralf Rangnick.
Ten Hag clearly believes Anthony is the solution to the problem. Given the strength of his previous comments, his interest in the Brazilian comes as no surprise. While still in charge of Ajax earlier this year, the 52-year-old was asked about transfer interest in his star player.
"It would be a loss for Ajax if Antony left," Ten Hag told De Telegraaf. "You don't have anyone in your current squad who can take his place. He is first-rate."
Ten Hag heaped even more praise on the exciting forward later in the season. "Without Antony, it's a little less fast and dynamic on the right, which also makes it more difficult for the team," he explained.
