‘I’M PURSUING MY OWN AMBITION’ – BOAKYE AGYARKO REJECTS ANOTHER APPOINTMENT

Following his expulsion as a minister in August 2018, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, a former Minister of Energy, has declared his opposition to any future appointments under the Akufo-Addo-led administration.

His removal was connected to part of the discussions he oversaw about the contentious power purchase deal between Ghana's government and Africa Middle East Resources Investment (AMERI).

He intends to utilise his time away from government to pursue his own presidential ambitions, according to him.

On Monday, June 20, Boakye Agyarko said on Asempa FM's Ekosii Sen programme that he deserves to be Ghana's next president, an ambition he is firmly committed to, despite opposition from many quarters.

"I'm pursuing my own presidential aspirations, which has been met with a lot of opposition." right from the start I shall not forsake it to pursue other interests. Look, I'm concentrating on what I need to accomplish for myself and my country. That is my primary emphasis. You go on if you serve with all your might and the individual does not appreciate it.

"I'm not going to accomplish something if I can't give it my all." My father reminded me one again that things done half-heartedly are never done correctly. If this [running for president] is my only concentration, please allow me to give it my all. Whatever I do in life, I make it a point not to have a look-warm mentality. Is it true that I am not deserving of being the NPP's flagbearer?"

The 66-year-old Akufo-Addo government's first Energy Minister was questioned.

Background

President Akufo-Addo fired Boakye Agyarko in August 2018 when it was revealed that the renegotiated AMERI transaction was riddled with corruption.

"President Akufo-Addo has ordered Mr Boakye Agyarko to pass over his post to Mr John Peter Amewu, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, who would operate as Minister of Energy temporarily until a permanent appointment is made."

The letter sent to dismiss Boakye Agyarko said, "The President wishes Mr Boakye Agyarko luck in his future endeavours."

With President Akufo-second Addo's four-year term ending in 2024, many are preparing to run in the NPP's future presidential primaries.

Apart from Boakye Agyarko, Alan Kyerematen, Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia are believed to be ready to publicly declare their candidacies to lead the NPP into the next election.
