Pep Guardiola's telling response after Barcelona's president makes his position on Bernardo Silva clear
Pep Guardiola has stated that Manchester City will not entertain any offers for Bernardo Silva this summer, despite Barcelona's renewed interest in the playmaker.
Pep Guardiola has stated unequivocally that he has no intention of selling Bernardo Silva this summer, despite Barcelona president Joan Laporta appearing to confirm the Spanish giants' renewed interest in the 27-year-old.
Last summer, Barcelona spent weeks pursuing Silva and did everything in their power to bring the midfielder to the Nou Camp. But Manchester City kept hold of a player who some thought was surplus to requirements, and the Portuguese playmaker went on to have his best season for the club.
Silva led the way for City, who won their fourth Premier League title in five years, with 13 goals and seven assists in all competitions. However, Silva's outstanding form has not gone unnoticed, with Barcelona seemingly poised to entice the midfielder away from the Etihad once more.
Guardiola and Laporta both made light of the interest during a lighthearted press conference confirming that City and Barcelona would meet in a charity friendly in Spain this summer. Guardiola laughed when Laporta asked if he would bring Silva to the Nou Camp, saying, "Bernardo and ten more."
The City manager then doubled down on his stance, claiming that the ex-Monaco man is too important to let go. "Today, I believe he will stay with us," he added, "but I have always said I don't want players who don't want to be with us." But Bernardo is important, and I believe he will remain."
Ironically, City are believed to have sanctioned Silva's departure last summer after the midfielder requested a move to Spain for family reasons. But Silva has re-established himself as one of City's top players in the last year, and the champions are unlikely to sell him now.
Barcelona had identified Silva as a possible replacement for Frenkie de Jong, who is being pursued by City's rivals, Manchester United. However, even if De Jong does end up fetching around £70 million, Barcelona is unlikely to be able to raise enough money from any potential sale to seriously test City's stance on Silva.
Meanwhile, City is moving forward with their own transfer plans in order to maintain their domestic dominance. Guardiola has already strengthened his attacking options by adding Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez.
The City manager is also rumored to be looking for a left-back and a defensive midfielder to replace Fernandinho, who is set to leave the club at the end of the month. City are reportedly interested in signing Leeds United talisman Kalvin Phillips to fill the vacant full-back position.
