Some locals have expressed concerns regarding the mission of the armed forces in response to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECGdeployment )'s and presence of military soldiers in the Krobo area in the Tema region.
However, the ECG has allayed the worries of people who might not be aware of the deployment's justification.
Sakyiwaa Mensah, the ECG's Tema Regional Public Relations Officer, explained the personnel's purpose in an interview with Joy Business: "The workers are to assist staff and contractors installing metres throughout the district."
"To offer technical support for the installation of prepaid metres, we are collaborating with the officers from the 49 Field Engineers Regiment.
"ECG has a more than 20-year history of cooperation with the Ghana Army. For instance, we held one with them in February of this year through our ECG Training School in Tema," she added.
Fears reduced by ECG following military placement in metre installation
The corporation has hired 90 more technical staff members from across its operations locations and contractors, in addition to the 50 electrical engineers from the 49 Field Engineers Regiment, as part of the deployment.
Out of the roughly 50,000 post-paid metres in the district, 3,000 were collected when the power distributor started its pre-installation survey and technical examination of metres in December 2021.
Fears reduced by ECG following military placement in metre installation
ECG field staff and contractors are conducting the exercise while being protected by armed police due to security concerns in the region, although this is reportedly slowing down the drill.
We can often repair more than 300 metres every day in other regions. Due to a lack of collaboration, the situation is a little sluggish. Due to opposition, we were only able to build a little over 250 metres for more than two months, Sakyiwaa complained.
She claims that because of the exercise's lag, the deployment will enable them to cover more land.
Despite having done so in other operational regions, the firm has faced harsh criticism for its plan to implement prepaid metres in the Krobo neighbourhood.
Some locals claim that ECG is still forcing the new metres down their throats, however ECG vehemently disputes this claim.
It claims that since 2021, it has communicated with key players, including conventional authorities, using a variety of channels, including mass media, in-person meetings, and other techniques as needed.
Due to efforts by some inhabitants to avoid paying for power consumed since 2014, the Krobo enclave has attracted attention from throughout the country in recent years.
The district owed over $70 million as of December 2021 for power used from 2014 to 2017, however this debt has been ring-fenced as a result of several multi-stakeholder interactions.
Power consumed from 2018 to 2021, however, must be paid for during the next five years following consultation with stakeholders.
