Chelsea has moved one step closer to signing Sevilla defender Jules Kounde. Since last summer, the French centre-back has been widely linked with the Premier League heavyweights.
According to Marca, the 23-year-old has agreed to personal terms with Chelsea on a five-year contract. Sevilla is reportedly seeking a fee of around £52 million for Kounde.
In the summer of 2019, Kounde moved to Sevilla from Bordeaux. He quickly established himself as a regular starter for the Spanish giants, helping them win the Europa League in his debut season.
His strong play throughout the 2020-21 season won him a spot in Didier Deschamps' France squad for Euro 2020 last summer. Last season, Kounde's strong defensive performances helped Sevilla finish fourth in La Liga.
Last summer, Chelsea were extensively connected with a bid for the Frenchman, but the deal fell through. This summer, Thomas Tuchel's side renewed their interest in the defender, seeing him as the ideal alternative for German center-back Antonio Rudiger. The 29-year-old will quit the club after his contract expires on June 30 and join Real Madrid.
According to reports, Barcelona is likely to join Chelsea in the fight to sign Kounde. The Blaugrana are looking to bolster their squad this summer in order to continue progressing under Xavi and increase their chances of winning La Liga.
According to Sport, the club is ready to get rid of Clement Lenglet and may try to find a successor for the 26-year-old.
However, Sevilla do not want to trade the 23-year-old to a domestic rival. Furthermore, unlike Tuchel's side, the Catalan giants may struggle to raise the sums needed to recruit the defender.
