Many Ghanaians have been told about how President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo made a pledge to build a National Cathedral for Ghana when he gets a chance to be President of Ghana but many people do n0t know where or how he made the promise to God.
According to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana National Cathedral on GTV, the vow was made by Akufo-Addo as a Foreign Minister in the year 2005 at the Washington National Cathedral on June of that year.
It was revealed that President Akufo-Addo, then a Foreign Minister had represented the Kufour government at the funeral of the late US President Ronald Reagan which was held at the Washington National Cathedral where about 4,000 people gathered at the cathedral for the service; including then President and Mrs. Bush, former presidents George H. W. and Barbara Bush, Gerald and Betty Ford, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, and Bill and Hillary Clinton. Members of Congress and past and present governors were also present from all parties.
Akufo-Addo who was party foreign dignitaries who attended coming from 167 nations across the world was impressed by the show of National Unity displayed and promised to build a similar Cathedral for Ghana of God made him President.
The dignitaries at the event with Akufo-Addo at the time included more than 40 past and present heads of state and government, then UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and then president of the European Commission, Romano Prodi. Leading the dignitaries were former President of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of Canada, Brian Mulroney, and Prince of Wales, Prince Charles (representing Queen Elizabeth II).
