Ms. Ekpe said that she would place the GJA at the forefront to guarantee journalists received what they were due and that she would provide possibilities to increase the association's accessibility by its members.

Mr. Abagali said the association's Public Affairs office had been more active in uniting journalists when one of them was attacked.

Additionally, he said that the custom of choosing the national executive entirely from Accra was flawed and needed to be changed because individuals from other areas also had a lot to contribute to the organisation.

Being in one of the other areas shouldn't be an obstacle, Mr. Abagali continued.

the route to the polls

Drama has been present throughout the way to the GJA national leadership election. The first was that the present GJA executive's term of office expired on November 17, 2020.

The mandate of the executive, whose term had ended, capacity to monitor the election was questioned by a member, delaying the election of new officials.

An internal settlement was reached to handle the issue. Some candidates questioned the validity of the voter registration when there was a second attempt to organise the election.

The Elections Dispute Adjudication Committee set June 24, 2022 as the date for the national and regional elections to take place following the resolution of all issues.

Petitions

When everything appeared to be in place for the elections to take place, Dotsey Koblah Aklorbortu, a member of the association's Western Regional branch, filed a petition with the elections committee's chairman accusing one of the candidates running for president of paying money to some Western Regional GJA members to influence them to vote in his favour. The petition was dated June 16, 2022.

Mr. Aklorbortu cited Articles 52(b), (c), and (d) of the GJA Constitution 2004 when he submitted his petition.

The petition was opposed, as the Western Regional Secretary of the organisation, Zambaga Rufai Saminu, petitioned the Chairman of the Elections Committee over unethical voting practises in a letter dated the same day, June 16, 2022.
