Remember back in school when you’d get the first-date jitters, and no matter how much you tried not to think about it, it was really hard not to? Remember when you both decided that watching a movie was a cool idea for a date, and as you tried to keep your cool until showtime, you had to figure out what cinematic presentation would serve as the date night movie of record for your date. In all honesty, trying to figure out a movie to watch on a first date probably involved a lot of minutes mostly asking each other, “Well, what do you want to see?”
The reason why first dates can be so tough for both people involved is because everyone is scared to look bad. You really do only have one chance to make a good impression, so making sure that you’re cool right out of the gate is pretty important. Plus, even though it’s not really discussed between the two of you, you’re on a date with the other person’s best friends and well-wishers. They’re ready to take copious notes about you and hand in their final verdict regarding a second date.
The stakes are high, but at the very least, you both had enough good sense to choose to watch a movie. There’s little pressure, you can still stay relatively quiet and not seem weird, and you can get a few more things to say when the time is right. When it comes to choosing the movie, choose something that’s fairly “chill” and looks like fun.
Here are some great movies to choose from:
A Simple Favor — We live in a world where “influencers” and bloggers/vloggers tend to have an increasing amount of clout in society. The opinion of these people tends to sway shopping habits and makes for quite an interesting arena on social media platforms. But, who are these people? This film takes this idea to another level & throws some serious twists in the mix for a film noir story for the 21st century.
Crazy Rich Asians — Stories about meeting a significant other’s parents for the first time can vary from super adorable to absolutely disastrous. This film takes on this age-old tale and decides to amp up the overall aesthetic and ambition of the movie itself. Mothers are hard to please, and when a son has a mother that constantly dotes on him, the presence of another woman in his life doesn’t usually bode well. Couple this with an element of wealth, class, and social structure, and you’ve got a must-see movie on your hands.
The House with a Clock in Its Walls — First-date movies aren’t usually where you want to experiment with what could be best described as a YA fantasy adventure. But it’s important to remember that you want to keep things light and fun, and this movie has got that in spades. Comedy, magic, a great cast, and fine source material make this movie the biggest surprise on this list.
Life Itself — Assembling one of the best ensemble casts in recent years is the first thing that hits you with this movie. If you’ve ever wondered about someone else’s life other than yours for any length of time, it’s because you’ve wondered how their life is/was different than yours. Life is the most interesting story, and each of us has something unique to bring to the table, which is what this films explores.
A date night movie, especially on a first date, shouldn’t make for a hard decision. In the end, it’s about spending time with someone you’re sweet on, so don’t sweat the small stuff & have fun.
