Paul Merson issues a clear warning to Arsenal regarding the transfer of Gabriel Jesus
Arsenal has been warned that it is Gabriel Jesus or bust in the summer transfer window.
The Gunners are pushing hard to sign the Manchester City striker and are now considered the favorites to do so after Tottenham dropped out of the race. Jesus is worth around £50 million and would fill a huge void at the Emirates after the departures of Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in recent months.
Former Arsenal great Paul Merson has claimed that the club's chances of finishing in the top four are dependent on whether or not they sign Jesus, because they can't rely on Eddie Nketiah to deliver a top-four finish. "If Arsenal is serious about winning, they must get Gabriel Jesus," Merson said about getting back into the top four. They have got to get him. It's that simple.
"If they don't, everything goes out the window. It makes no difference what else they do. Up front, they currently only have Eddie Nketiah. And, with due respect, Nketiah will not get you into the top four. There is absolutely no chance. That is a proven fact.
He continued in his Daily Star column: "As a result, they require Jesus. They do not require young players with potential such as Fabio Vieira. They require experience. And Jesus has a lot of it. If they don't get him, they'll only have one center forward, and let's be honest, he wouldn't be there if it weren't for Aubameyang and Lacazette's contract situations.
They must resolve the Jesus sign as soon as possible. I believe he is capable of transforming Arsenal. He is not given the credit he deserves." Yes, he misses chances, but he never hides and is a centre forward desperate to score goals. He has that hunger and a bit of a selfish streak that you require. Arsenal must start taking points away from the top teams. Too often, they are beaten too easily by the top teams. It's just a matter of getting that consistency because it hasn't been there, and that is their major weakness. But I don't believe they have the personnel.
