Sporting CP's Matheus Nunes in action
Here are the top Wolves stories for this coming Saturday, June 25.
Nunes continues his waiting game
Midfielder Matheus Nunes of Sporting is a player that Wolverhampton Wanderers must wait on.
After a strong two years at Sporting, Portugal's Nunes is in high demand, and Wolves is one of the teams vying for his services. Nunes has reportedly been discussed between Jorge Mendes and Barcelona officials, as well as with Newcastle United and Everton.
The 23-year-old is now on vacation in Rio de Janeiro and is waiting till he gets back to Lisbon before making any choices on his future. Wolves are searching the market for potential midfield options as they are likely to lose Enzo Fernandez to Benfica.
Wolves would have to give Sporting up to €40 million (£34 million) as part of a deal that might also include add-ons to acquire Nunes. Bruno Lage holds him in high regard, and the Wolves hierarchy sees him as a player with enormous potential.
However, Nunes needs to be persuaded to leave Sporting, where Champions League eligibility for the upcoming season is certain, for a team that placed 10th in the Premier League.
Before the start of the preseason in July, Lage expected the majority of the Wolves' summer work to be finished, but the head coach was aware that would be a difficult task. He understands that the players Wolves are interested in will receive many offers.
In April, Lage said, "It's hard for us. "We have reached a point where we require the appropriate players at the appropriate cost to move us to a higher level. We must also persuade them to visit this location. Finally, we must relocate these players to Wolverhampton so they can collaborate with us and make us better. The player needs to be located, and once he is,We need to persuade him that our project is the best one for him and his career out of the 10 or 12 alternatives he may have.
Wolves may sign South American treasures
With Enzo Fernandez about to finalize a deal to Benfica, Wolverhampton Wanderers have already missed out on two South American treasures this summer.
If Wolves are unable to quickly come up with a solution, Fernandez will pay €18 million to join Benfica. Following Brazilian winger Marquinhos' decision to choose Arsenal over Wolves, Fernandez was rejected.
Though unlikely to be discouraged, wolves still intend to enter the South American market this summer. Technical director Scott Sellars said, "I think that showed last summer where we signed Yerson Mosquera from Colombia.
The market is wide open and it's something we're continually looking at since that was something we probably wouldn't have been able to do before (Brexit). We work with Asia as well, obviously due to our ownership, and we do a lot more work in South America than we ever have, so we are constantly looking at all the markets.
Numerous future superstars from South America are impatiently awaiting a chance to play football in Europe. The players who satisfy Wolves' transfer requirements can be found HERE.
Neves was taken aback by Lage.
In his first season as Wolverhampton Wanderers' head coach, Bruno Lage has impressed Ruben Neves.
Lage, 45, took over as head coach of the Wolves 12 months ago, and in his debut year, he guided the team to a 10th-place result. Before a stretch of nine losses in the final 14 games, Wolves had a brief flirtation with the European spots.
John Ruddy, Romain Saiss, and Marcal, all seasoned players for Wolves, have been dismissed, and the team may lose more players this summer. After a stellar 2021–2022 season, Neves is one of many whose future at Wolves is in doubt.
The midfielder acknowledged that, with Barcelona and Manchester United showing interest in him, he might have played his final match for the team at Anfield in May. Neves is currently expected to remain with Wolves since they have not yet received any firm proposals for him.
It's safe to say that Lage and Neves share a deep affection for each other. Lage values Neves at £100 million. I'm impressed with the way he works, Neves stated after making his 200th appearance for Wolves earlier this year. I had never met him before. I recognized him from Benfica, but I was unaware of his methodology.
"I communicated with Joao Felix as soon as there was mention of Bruno Lage visiting this location. You will enjoy working with him, as he assured me, and that is true. Because of his approach, he is a fantastic manager to work with. He constantly seeks to remove what is finest from us. He is never content.
"He just considers our careers and futures, and the way he works is amazing. We have a ton of information on football and the opposition. We enter the games with a thorough understanding of both our tasks and those of our opponents. It is ideal for us.
