Arsenal told Gonzalo Higuain he's "too expensive" days before record Mesut Ozil transfer
Gonzalo Higuain has opened up about his Arsenal snub by revealing that the Gunners told him he was "too expensive" a few days before they spent a then-club-record £42.5 million on Mesut Ozil. Arsenal passed up the chance to sign renowned Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain back in 2013 for financial reasons before then splashing the cash on Mesut Ozil instead.
The Argentine striker had a great career in Europe, scoring a ton of goals for teams like Juventus, Real Madrid, and Napoli. The forward also had loan stints with Chelsea and AC Milan, but in 2013 he came agonizingly close to joining Arsenal, the Blues' London rivals.
Early in his career, Higuain was frequently associated with the Gunners, with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger rumored to be a major fan of the hitman. However, no deal ever materialized, in part due to the north Londoners' unprecedented snub of the chance to recruit the striker.
The 34-year-old, who is presently playing for David Beckham's Inter Miami in the MLS, admitted he was shocked by what happened when Arsenal rejected the striker in 2013 on the grounds that he was "too pricey" - before spending big on Ozil in his place. In a recent interview, he stated to TyC Sports: "There was [an opportunity to sign for Arsenal] before I moved to Napoli.
