DRAINAGE EXPERT REVEALS WHY EVERY COMMUNITY IN GHANA MAY BE FLOODING SOON

With rainwater overflowing banks in other parts of the nation, Accra's yearly flooding has expanded its bounds this year.

Since each anniversary is "celebrated," the country's flooding problems only get worse, the historic June 3 tragedy of 2015 serves as at least one point of comparison for many Ghanaians on how residents have dealt with floods over the years.

Because the drainage master plan created by Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah has not been implemented, drainage specialist Ing. Thomas Peprah Manu has issued a warning that the entire nation may soon experience floods.

He revealed Dr. Nkrumah created a master plan for drainage and sewage that couldn't be put into action after his coup during his participation on Maakye Friday, June 24, 2022.

Other areas that had not previously seen floods are now experiencing it, according to Ing. Manu, and it will soon spread to the Municipal and District Assemblies (MDAs).

"Nkrumah created the master designs for sewage and drainage, but he was toppled and nobody completed them until 1992, when Rawlings began to look at them.

Therefore, the reason we are in this situation is because we disobeyed the grand design. The other areas did not initially flood. But right now, they're all rushing. Because the MDAs lack a master plan, it will reach the districts, he claimed.

The drain specialist lamented that estate developers and landowners were selling parcels of land without having properly designed drainage systems. Before the issue gets out of hand, he urged the administration to make sure that correct drainage and sewage plans are carried out.

"We are offering plots for sale without any drainage plans. Drainage layouts are supposed to be a part of District Assemblies' plans, but no one is enforcing that. Before demolishing structures in waterways, we wait for people to start building there. We must start over from scratch. There is no strategy for the larger ones because everyone is completing their drain. He said, "Urban roads, highways, and the others all design their drains independently.

In order to temporarily stop the threat, Ing. Manu suggested the "retarding tanks" method, in which drains would be gathered at different locations and gradually allowed to flow after the rains to prevent floods.

The Dutch understood from the Master Plan that the enormous floods from Aburi would flood the Odaw River if they weren't held back. We must begin creating tabs. In order to open the gutters after the rains so that they can also drain, we need to postpone part of the fluids (in the retarding tanks). The Odaw won't be under any pressure from this.

Instead of waiting for the rains to start before discussing flooding, he has urged the media to incorporate environmental efforts into their shows.
