In theory, according to Gabby Otchere Darko, a prominent member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), he is not opposed to the IMF programme.
He clarified that he opposes an IMF scheme that provides the nation with little but sets restrictions that would ultimately harm the poor, employment, and companies more.
On Monday, June 27, he stated in a series of tweets, "Am I against an IMF programme in principle? No”
"I oppose an IMF programme that offers us pitiful sums of money while imposing requirements that would ultimately harm the poor, employment opportunities, and companies more. The Covid-19 and the Ukraine War are more to our demise than to that of Africa."We take action that will boost our ability to weather this powerful storm, and that action ought to take place quite soon. Do you object to an IMF programme?
The troubles in the local economy suggest that debates over whether Ghana should seek assistance from the IMF again won't end anytime soon.
Ghana has to return to the IMF, according to Mr. Joe Jackson, Chief Operations Officer of Dalex Finance.
In his opinion, the nation would not be able to overcome its budgetary problems without seeking assistance from the Bretton Woods system.
On Tuesday, June 21, Mr. Jackson stated, "I think the IMF is the greatest choice to limit the excesses we confront," in an interview with TV3's Komla Adom during the midday broadcast.
"Our budget deficit is enormous, we have little fiscal room, and we need the IMF's assistance to keep the international markets open and the money flowing. In all honesty, I don't see how we can avoid going to the IMF.
Recently, Dr. Adu Sarkodie, another economist, predicted that Ghana will certainly request assistance from the IMF again.
If this ultimately occurs, he claimed, it will have an impact on a number of government initiatives, including the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) and the free senior high school.
"We'll probably visit the IMF again. Because of the conditionality, I don't enjoy it when we go there. On June 16, Dr. Adu Sarkodie said on 3FM, "They may beg us to repeal Free SHS, NABCO, and all that, but now is the moment we need all these social interventions.
Recently, Ghana would not seek assistance from the IMF again, according to Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
According to him, the government has implemented policies, such as pay reductions and others, as well as programmes to address the key economic problems.
In response to a question on whether Ghana would consider returning to the IMF from an international journalist, Mr. Ofori-Atta made these comments during a news conference in Accra on May 12th, Thursday.
He responded by saying, "All the white people are merely interested in our joining the IMF programme. Why, I constantly wonder.
"We are fund members, and the fund has provided us with two main areas of action. The first is the advice we receive as a result of the extraordinary knowledge the fund possesses, and the second is these programme interventions that provide us with resources.
"I believe that the problem of Ghana's capacity to think through the consolidation process exists, as you can see from the budget that we built for 2022 and the following statement that we have made. discipline itself in relation to the 20%, etc. that we have demonstrated.
