Sadio Mane analyzes his new shirt number after departing Liverpool for Bayern Munich.
Sadio Mane has been speaking about his move to Bayern Munich and his decision to choose his designated shirt number since completing his big-money switch.
Sadio Mane has revealed why he chose to wear the No.17 shirt for Bayern Munich after joining from Liverpool last week.
After six successful years with the Reds, where he won four major trophies, including the Premier League and the Champions League, the Senegal international completed the £35 million switch to the Allianz Arena. He scored 120 goals in 269 appearances and was part of a potent front three with Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.
Despite reports of interest from PSG and Real Madrid, Mane has decided to embark on a new adventure with Bayern Munich as his preferred destination. The 30-year-old has agreed to a three-year contract and is eager to begin a new chapter in his career.
When asked why he chose the No.17 shirt, Mane explained to the Bayern website that it was simply the best one available "I chose 17 from the available free jersey numbers at FC Bayern and hope to celebrate many victories with my team and this number. Now I'm looking forward to getting started on season preparations with my new teammates as soon as possible."
Michael Cuisance did wear that number last season after Jerome Boateng wore it for ten seasons after joining the club from Manchester City in 2011. With the number of trophies and appearances he racked up at the Bavarian club during his decade there, the latter has written himself into Bayern folklore. Among those who have worn that jersey are Mark van Bommel and Thorsten Fink.
"I'm overjoyed to finally be at FC Bayern in Munich," Mane said. "We talked a lot, and I felt a lot of interest from this great club right from the start, so there were no doubts for me." This challenge has come at the perfect time.
"I want to accomplish a lot with this club, as well as in Europe. I watched a lot of Bayern Munich games during my time in Salzburg - I adore this club!"
Bayern Munich is Mane's fifth club in his professional career. He's played for Metz, Red Bull Salzburg, Southampton, and Liverpool in the past. Other awards for the 91-cap international include the Africa Cup of Nations, Austrian Bundesliga, and Austrian Cup.
"Sadio Mane is a global star who highlights FC Bayern's appeal and will increase the attractiveness of the Bundesliga as a whole," Bayern president Herbert Hainer said.
"Fans flock to stadiums to see such athletes. It's fantastic that our board, led by Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic, was able to bring Sadio Mane to FC Bayern."
