Mohamed Salah's transfer option as Liverpool prepares for exit
The Liverpool talisman now appears unlikely to sign a new contract with the Reds and has been linked with a number of other clubs keen to sign him on a free transfer.
Mohamed Salah's demands are still unlikely to be met by the Liverpool hierarchy, and his time at Anfield appears to be coming to an end.
The Egyptian has one year left on his current Reds contract, but the most likely outcome appears to be that the Liverpool legend will leave Merseyside on a free transfer in a year's time.
While Liverpool executives are said to have worked tirelessly to reach an agreement with their star player, owners FSG are said to be unwilling to break the wage structure that the club has long had in place to ensure they can operate within their means in order to keep Salah at Anfield.
Salah leaving this summer is extremely unlikely. He has stated publicly that he will be a Liverpool player next season. That being said, if any club comes in for him in the coming weeks, it is rumoured that the Reds have set a £60 million price tag on his head.
Any club would be foolish to spend that much money on Salah, regardless of his talent, because he would be available for nothing this time next year. Salah has already hinted at where he wants to play football after his Liverpool chapter concludes.
Salah responded to Marca's question about whether he could see himself playing in La Liga after previously playing in the Premier League and Serie A: "I hope to continue playing for many years to come. Why not? Nobody knows what the future holds, so... maybe one day [I'll play in Spain], yes."
Given the way the Spanish top flight is dominated by a few clubs, only Real Madrid or Barcelona are likely to sign Salah anytime soon. Previous comments made by the 30-year-old about having "scores to settle" with Los Blancos were not well received by some members of the Santiago Bernabeu dressing room.
Fede Valverde expressed his feelings about Salah's remark to Club del Deportista magazine ahead of Liverpool's Champions League final against Real Madrid last season. "Obviously, they are words that can be interpreted in any way. I'm his opponent, and the players are disrespecting the Real Madrid badge."
With that in mind, Salah may not be received as warmly in the Spanish capital, but one Premier League legend believes he should prefer a move to the Camp Nou anyway. Earlier this year, Arsenal legend Robert Pires weighed in on Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah's future.
"Mohamed Salah's future depends on what he wants, whether he stays with Liverpool or seeks new experiences," Pires told Egyptian television. "Between Barcelona and Real Madrid, and given the player's qualities, I believe Salah would perform better with Barcelona; his communication with Xavi will be simple."
