Lionel Messi defeats Ronaldo in shirt sales as PSG sells one million

Rival Lionel Messi beat Cristiano Ronaldo to the title of player with the most club shirts sold worldwide.

Both players switched teams last season, with Ronaldo, 37, coming from Juventus to Manchester United after leaving for Real Madrid 12 years earlier.

To conclude his relationship with Barcelona, Argentine superstar Messi joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.

In terms of shirt sales in September, Ronaldo was far ahead of the 35-year-old with £187.1 million, or almost twice as much as Messi's £103.8 million.

But after PSG sold over a million "Messi 30" jerseys, the six-time Ballon d'Or winner passed the former Sporting Lisbon star.

With the forward accounting for 60% of sales, it is the first time in the club's history that they have been able to sell that many shirts.

Messi shirt sales reportedly made almost £800,000 in the first three hours after going on sale, according to Marca.

Les Parisiens relocated their official club store to the Champs-Elysees to double its size in anticipation of the visit of the 2021 Copa America champion.

Marc Armstrong, PSG's chief partnerships officer, discussed the significance of Messi's presence with the Spanish news site.

Demand has increased by 30 to 40%, and the only thing that can actually slow it down is supply, he said.

"When a big signing like Ronaldo to United occurs, for instance, you could assume he's going to be funded by selling jerseys. That's not the case, though. There are just so many extra shirts you can make." We are unable to match the demand for Messi shirts despite the arrangement being set up to provide extremely crucial minimums. The ceiling has been attained." No one could fulfill that need. We may sell more jerseys per player than any other team in the world already, which elevates us to the next level.

The revenue from the Jordan brand is enormous, but the desire for lifestyle goods increases even greater when a star like Messi is signed.

Armstrong added that Messi's arrival at Parc des Princes brought PSG almost £600 million in income.
