Meeting between Jorge Mendes and Todd Boehly, the new owner of Chelsea, did no one any harm, not even Man United.
November saw Ronaldo enter the game at Chelsea.
Because of all the departures from Chelsea, Stamford Bridge may have fewer offices than Old Trafford. Following the departures of Bruce Buck and Marina Granovskaia last week, Petr Cech's position as technical and performance advisor was confirmed by Chelsea on Monday morning.
All three are followers of Roman Abramovich and are associated with his heyday of sportswashing. Todd Boehly, Chelsea's new American owner, has already taken a more active role in the club's operations than Abramovich and his fellow Premier League owners from across the Atlantic.
Boehly's meeting with Jorge Mendes brings up memories of Ed Woodward cajoling the most prominent agent in the game seven years prior. Before Cristiano Ronaldo made his Old Trafford debut, Woodward gave Mendes a hug in the directors' box and negotiated contracts for his clients Angel di Maria, Radamel Falcao, and Jose Mourinho. He also arranged for Mendes' daughter to complete work experience at Manchester United.
Chelsea has already trimmed their losses on their most expensive signing (for a year) after only the sixth trophyless season in the last 20 years, and their new owner is showing off his strength. Boehly will need to rely on agents and middlemen now that Granovskaia is gone because he is playing in a different ballpark than Dodger Stadium. Meeting Mendes temporarily stops the hyenas from howling as they wait for a first transfer in the summer.
Ronaldo comes to mind when you think about Mendes. Boehly's popularity is sure to rise as a result of Chelsea's association with the league's top scorer. While most people were waiting for Paul McCartney to perform on the Pyramid Stage on Saturday, news of Ronaldo coming up in conversations between Boehly and Mendes surfaced. From one aging headlining performer to the next.
He is not for sale as a result of their inspiration to United. According to United sources, many of Mendes' clients are more likely to sign with Chelsea than Ronaldo.
Similar to Abramovich 19 years ago, Boehly is ready to make the competitors uncomfortable. Damien Duff, Joe Cole, and Juan Sebastian Veron, a player for United, were purchased by Chelsea for £15 million in 2003.For the following three years, they would continue to dominate any rivals.
United with Veron resembled a superstar attending the Met Gala dressed in the most expensive items available, which were meretricious and unsuitable for regular wear. Veron was fragile but had the beauty of a diamond.
On United's 2003 preseason tour of the United States, Sir Alex Ferguson revealed, "The vibe we got was they (Chelsea) had been talking to him. "I asked him whether he wanted to depart, but he never responded to me." Ferguson bemoaned Veron's unwillingness to speak English in his second autobiography, which was published ten years later: "With Veron it was just, 'Mister'."
During the 2003 tour, Veron works out in front of Ferguson in New Jersey.
Veron did not play for United for the full 90 minutes in the final two months of his second season and instead made 14 appearances for Chelsea, a luxury Jose Mourinho could not afford. Veron spent one season on loan before being sold to Inter Milan.
Veron was hugged by United supporters who were screaming "Veron, Veron" and "Ar-gen-ti-na." His final act, an audaciously incredible assist for Ruud van Nistelrooy against Juventus in New Jersey, solidified his cult status.
Ferguson chose to support Brazilians over Argentinians and bemoaned Ronaldinho's denial. Later that summer, after a deal for Eric Djemba-Djemba had already been reached, Kleberson was acquired. Although Veron was unnecessary, their signings were ill-advised.
Ronaldo is essential. In a balanced front three with artistic wingers on either side, Erik ten Hag believes he will start every game. Ten Hag prefers Antony's versatility over that of a pure No. 9, even though Marcus Rashford may be given a trial run in the middle of preseason.
Following a revelation in a Spanish sports publication about Ronaldo's purported dissatisfaction with United's lack of market activity, there were follow-ups in Portugal and Italy. Sporting Lisbon and Roma have both been mentioned in connection with Ronaldo, and Jose Mourinho is rumored to think the Roma connection to be particularly absurd.
Following the 2017 Super Cup in Skopje, Ronaldo and Mourinho
Mendes has a responsibility to keep Ronaldo desirable and relevant. While the United players were still in the locker room at Vicarage Road, Mendes had already pressed Ed Woodward for confirmation that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would really be leaving. He was gone the following morning.
To placate Ronaldo, who won three Champions Leagues while working under Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid, unfounded rumors about Zidane succeeding Solskjaer were released.
All sides gain from Boehly and Mendes' in-person interaction: Mendes has made Ronaldo newsworthy, Chelsea appear to be serious competitors, and United are quickly reacting to the news. They cannot accept his departure.
