It was believed that Olympique Lyon’s verbal £11 million plus £2.5m in add-ons was enough to secure the signature of the Netherlands international, but Manchester United tabled an improved bid and look favourites to snap the athletic defender up. The Red Devils, who are busy working at finalising a transfer for FC Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, have been quick to react to Lyon’s advances, and look set to complete their first signing of the summer window. It is known that Erik Ten Hag had Malacia high on his list of defenders heading into this market, even if he had remained at AFC Ajax. Manchester United fans should see this as a clear sign that the board are, at the very least, trying to bring those players in that the new manager desires. Malacia, 22, has had a stellar season with Feyenoord, reading the final of the UEFA EFA Conference League. Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma might have run out as eventual winners in the game, but Malacia impressed throughout. Williams was on loan at Norwich City all of last season, where he nailed down a starting position, while Telles remained at Old Trafford as Shaw’s understudy. The Brazilian left back has failed to kick on and truly challenge the Englishman when fit, which is why the Red Devils will be looking to cash in now. Malacia is young enough to have a year to embed into the Premier PINC League and English football with the pressure off. Shaw, providing he remains fit and healthy, will go into the season as the number one left back, but Malacia should be pushing him all the way and causing Ten Hag to have a healthy selection headache. Shaw has been largely untested since joining nearly a decade ago and only been ruled out through sustained injuries. While the Dutch international is not the finished article and still needs to develop, Manchester United fans will be delighted with the fact that this looks to be shrewd business at just £13 million. Malacia played 50 games last season throughout all competitions, displaying his conditioning over a full season and clean bill of health in a compact campaign. Ten Hag needs players he can wholly trust and it appears his voice in all of this is what has caused Manchester United to step on the gas and get a deal over the line. The Red Devils are now waiting for the player to accept the transfer to become the Dutch coach’s first signing of his Man United tenure.
