Rex Omar, a prominent member of Arise Ghana, has accused the police of behaving in "bad faith" at the group's rally on Tuesday.
He claims that the police's failure to acknowledge the protest's earlier start time and location was a factor in the violence that took place on Tuesday.
Rex Omar said that the police started the violence by throwing stones first, saying this while speaking at a press conference in Accra.
The police "showed us a poor faith from day one since we engaged them a full month in advance, in fact, this demonstration was intended to take place on the 21st and 22nd...
As for their using tear gas, rubber bullets, and other weapons, I think that they initiated it since we have proof that the individuals who hurled stones at them were inspired by them, he added.
While the protesters had kept order throughout, "party police members chose to do whatever they want to do," he said.
After the police used tear gas on the enraged crowd to calm them down, the protest over the severe economic conditions became violent. The police also used water cannons to disperse the protesters in addition to tear gas.
While the cause of the incident is uncertain, several protesters were spotted throwing stones at police officers and their cars. As a result, some police cars were damaged, and some policemen were also hurt.
The police and the protesters had got into a stalemate over the designated route for the event.
This came after the police made an attempt to carry out the Accra High Court's order asking the demonstrators to shift from the Obra Spot to Independence Square.
Arrests
Three of the demonstrators were later taken into custody by the police at the protest location.
Joy News is aware that the police have taken a number of additional people into custody.
