Romelu Lukaku has spoken out about his return to Inter Milan as he prepares to sign a loan deal with the Italian club.
Lukaku led Inter to the Serie A title in 2020-21, scoring 24 league goals. His form in Italy earned him a club-record £97.5 million move to Chelsea, but his second stint with the London club hasn't gone as planned.
Lukaku is returning to his former club on loan after scoring just eight times in the Premier League last season, with the Nerazzuri agreeing to a £7 million fee and the Belgium star taking a pay cut. The 29-year-old has returned to Italy to finalize the deal ahead of the 2022-23 season, where he will look to help Simone Inzaghi's side finish first.
I'm overjoyed to be back. Lukaku said as he was greeted by reporters after landing in Milan. The remarks come after the striker expressed his continued affection for the Serie A club only a few months into his second Chelsea stint.
Everything that happened was not supposed to happen this way, in my opinion "Lukaku told Sky Sport Italia just before the new year. "It bothers me how I left Inter, how I communicated with the fans, because it is not the right time now, but it was not the right time when I left.
Now I believe it is appropriate to speak because I have always stated that Inter is in my heart and that I hope to return to play there. I am in love with Italy, and now is the time to speak up and let people know what really happened, without disparaging people, because I am not like that.
Chelsea have been working on strengthening their forward line in preparation for Lukaku's departure from Stamford Bridge for the upcoming season. After the departure of previous transfer guru Marina Granovskaia, owner Todd Boehly has taken on an interim sporting director role, and the Blues have been linked with attacking talents from the Premier League and beyond.
Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar has been linked with a move, with the French champions reportedly telling the Brazilian that they no longer require his services. Thiago Silva, a Chelsea defender, has urged his compatriot to join him in west London, though an agreement has yet to be reached.
Raphinha is another Brazilian on the Blues' radar, with the Leeds United star also wanted by Arsenal and Barcelona. Chelsea is also still interested in Raheem Sterling, who is in the final year of his Manchester City contract and could be available for around £55 million.
