Wayne Rooney loses his mind Sir Alex Ferguson in his farewell statement to Derby County.
The Manchester United legend announced his departure from his first managerial role with Derby County last week, citing ongoing issues at the League One club in a statement to fans.
After his departure was confirmed, Wayne Rooney channeled his inner Sir Alex Ferguson in a heartfelt message to Derby County fans.
The former Manchester United forward announced his departure from Pride Park last week, amid the chaos of the East Midlands club's protracted takeover process. For the time being, former assistant Liam Rosenior will take charge of the team and their attempts to leave League One at the first attempt.
Rooney's withdrawal ends an impressive spell with the Rams, with the ex-England striker keeping them in the Championship initially, with only a massive EFL points deduction for their administration causing them to be relegated last season. In total, the 36-year-old Derby manager oversaw 85 games, winning 24 of them.
Rooney expressed his gratitude on Twitter on Wednesday evening, writing: "A massive thank you to all the fans, players, and staff at @dcfcofficial for your support over the last three years." This has been one of the most difficult decisions I've had to make in my professional life.
"Thank you for accepting me as one of your own. Please rally behind the next manager and give them what you gave me in terms of trust, loyalty, and unwavering support. Some wonderful memories that I will never forget."
Rooney's heartfelt message brought back memories of former manager Sir Alex Ferguson's departure from Old Trafford. The legendary Scot announced his departure from the Red Devils after a trophy-laden 27-year reign.
His final episode as Manchester United manager occurred during the 2012/13 season, with his final Old Trafford appearance coming in the form of a 2-1 victory over Swansea City. Ferguson took to the field after the game to urge patience for new manager David Moyes.
Following the game and subsequent trophy lift, he stated: "I'd like to thank the players and staff for their support during difficult times. It is now your responsibility to support the new manager."
Ferguson's appeals, of course, fell on deaf ears, as Moyes only lasted eight months of his six-year contract at Old Trafford. His tenure came to an end with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Everton, effectively ending the club's hopes of returning to the Champions League.
Since his dismissal, the Red Devils have had five different permanent managers. Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and Ralf Rangnick have all left the Old Trafford hotseat, with Dutchman Erik ten Hag the latest to take the reins and aim to improve on the Red Devils' disastrous campaign last season.
Derby will undoubtedly hope that their search for a successful successor to Rooney will be shorter. Throughout the season, the Rams will aim to secure promotion from League One.
