Paul Merson believes that if Manchester United wants to contend for the top four next season, they will need to bring in at least three or four new players during the summer transfer window.
As new manager Erik ten Hag seeks to assemble a team that can return to the top four next season, the Red Devils are unavoidably associated with several prospective incoming moves this summer.
But despite a lot of rumors and players like Frenkie De Jong being connected to moves to Old Trafford,The Red Devils have not yet made any fresh additions for this summer official.
Following a poor sixth-place finish and a trophyless season in 2018, Ten Hag has been tasked with guiding Manchester United back into the top four and into the Champions League for the following season.
Merson, a former Arsenal player, believes that Ten Hag is currently facing the greatest challenge of his career at Old Trafford and has advised the Dutch head coach to make big additions to his squad this summer if he wants to give his team any chance of returning to the top four.
The challenge Ten Hag is facing now won't get much tougher if he manages it for the remainder of his life, according to Merson.
"This is a huge task. He is taking charge while things are chaotic at the biggest club in the world.
"This team won't get you in the top four, so he needs to bring in as many players as he can. They need to add some players, like the talented footballer (Frenkie) De Jong from Barcelona, and then they may advance.
For them to contend for fourth place, they need at least three or four players.
This summer, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, and Nemanja Matic were among the first-team players that Manchester United let go.
On August 7, the Red Devils' home Premier League opener versus Brighton will take place.
