Far away from informal education, in the very long run of the never ending process of formal education which many would describe as iterative as one moves from a stage to more advanced stages, the need for acquiring and understanding the theoretical concepts of all that is taught in the classroom cannot be overstated as it is very necessary for getting the nicest grades as well. However, have you ever sat down and wondered how all those As and Bs and Cs are going to help you in a company should you get employed? In fact, if you are called upon to deliver an A in a paper you had an A few months ago, can you? This scenario is all that is needed for an individual to understand that as much as knowledge is important, it is almost useless without the necessary skills and how to apply the theory into solving problems in the society.
Building a strong Curriculum Vitae (CV) or resume is very important. Yes, the grades and academic certificates are important but how many people are applying with similar CVs? What will differentiate you from another person with a similar academic track record is the skills you will acquire in the long run of your formal education. The skills may either be soft or hard. Soft skills are the skills that are applicable in all areas of profession. They are easy to have and at the same time very difficult to develop them. Everyone can speak but not everyone can communicate effectively. And mind you, great communication is very key in solving problems. To think outside the box to solve a problem is another underrated skill, popularly known as creativity. Adapting in different areas in the same field, ability to achieve a common goal in a team no matter the group of people you find yourself, emotional intelligence and many others are some soft skills that may be required of an individual or a student who would want to effect positive changes in the society. Hard skills are the skills that are limited to an area of profession. Usually they put the theories of what have been taught in class into real world applications to solve problems. Hard skills may be computing through programming languages, HTML and CSS, may also be analytical skills, project management skills, marketing skills, writing and typing skills, a degree or even foreign language skills. Having these soft skills and hard skills are what will differentiate you from another applicant or your mate.
Knowledge, they say is power. However, power is also useless in the wrong hands. Combining knowledge and skills is very important as a student, especially for those who may want to further education in the future.
