The Western Regional House of Chiefs has voiced its unhappiness about the terrible condition of the region's roadways.

Given how crucial the area is to the demands of the nation's growth, the House is horrified that highways leading to, particularly productive villages in the region, have been kept inaccessible.

At a meeting with its members, the regional coordinating council, heads of departments, and MMDCEs, the House of Chiefs voiced their discontent.

It was to discuss the situation in the area and evaluate the government's answers to the development issues that are currently being faced.

Speaking on behalf of the House, the Omanhen of Gwira, Awulai Angamatu Gyan, said that while the area considerably contributes to the nation's development requirements, the current situation leaves much to be desired.

He claims that Nananom is particularly concerned about the condition of the roads. He noted that the bulk of the area's roadways are littered with potentially fatal potholes, making it dangerous to drive on them.

The idea that tonnes of farm food are being allowed to perish on the highways going to productive towns is really alarming.

"Regional Minister, you have no clue at all the sort of insults we get everytime we visit our community due to the terrible condition of our roads, particularly the one between Takoradi and Tarkwa. For us as Nananom, the insults we get from this route are too much. Minister, I can report that the main road connecting Agona with Discove and Busua is not in good condition.

In response, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, Minister for the Western Region, said that about 2000 km of road had been contracted out in the area.

Unfortunately, he noted that the majority of the contractors had left the site under the justification of unpaid bills.

"Actually Nana, the Western Region alone has 1,959 kilometres (1,959) worth of roads that we have given to contractors. However, several of the contractors are not present. Nana, if all of the contractors were repairing the roads, this problem would not exist today.

"The contractors are dissatisfied with the financing, they say. But Nana, before a contractor is given a contract, he or she must present documentation of their bank accounts proving their suitability for the position.
