Barça close to Gavi renewal agreement after latest De la Peña meeting
16/06/2022 Upd. at 13:09 CEST The midfielder's agent met with sporting director Alemany on Thursday A contract extension is now thought to be just a matter of time Barcelona sporting director Mateu Alemany met again with Gavi's agent Ivan de la Peña at the club's training ground on Thursday. The meeting lasted for an hour and the feelings afterward were good on both sides. The agreement to renew Gavi's contract is still not finalised, but it's now almost a given that he will remain at Camp Nou given recent advances. The two parties were a long way apart when negotiations started and Joan Laporta's comments to put pressure on De la Peña did not go down well with the agent. However, that has been overcome and recent contact has been positive. The new offer from Barça is close to what De la Peña wants. NEW CONTRACT The idea is to thrash out the final few discrepancies in the coming days and to announce that Gavi, 17, will extend his current terms, which expire in 2023 and include a €50m release clause. Gavi will sign a new four-year deal with a €1 billion release clause. His wages will be similar to defender Ronald Araujo, who also renewed recently.
Renewal imminent: Barcelona expected to announce new deal for midfielder soon
Barcelona’s negotiations with Gavi over a new deal have lengthened significantly over the course of the past few months. The two parties had been locked in negotiations for a while without reaching a definitive agreement. The lack of an agreement had led to widespread speculation surrounding Gavi’s future at Camp Nou. Both Liverpool and Manchester City have expressed the interest in the youngster. The Premier League giants are even willing to meet the player’s €50 million release clause while handing him a lucrative contract. But their pursuit of Gavi may only lead to a dead-end, as Barcelona are currently on the verge of sealing an agreement with the youngster, reports RAC1. The Catalan news outlet suggests Barça’s efforts to renew the contract of Gavi, which expires in 2023, are “practically done”. Gavi’s representative and the club had met earlier in the morning. The two parties had healthy discussions and have agreed on proposed terms, thus paving the way for the player to extend his current deal at Camp Nou. Various reports across Spanish media had pointed at the 17-year-old’s desire to continue at Barcelona and prosper under the leadership of Xavi Hernandez. It might have played a key role in helping Barcelona prevail in the discussions, as the Catalans were reluctant in meeting the player’s hefty wage demands. Barcelona are reportedly expected to offer Gavi a four-year contract and increase his release clause from €50 million to €1 billion, thus keeping him in the same league with the likes of Ronald Araujo, Ansu Fati and Pedri. With the deal almost on the verge of completion, Barça are expected to announce the agreement in the next few hours.
All is set for midfielder Gavi's new four year contract with Barcelona
19/06/2022 Upd. at 20:33 CEST The agreement is in place and could be announced soon One last revision of the documents needs to take place Barcelona have practically closed Gavi's contract renewal. After Thursday's meeting, in which an agreement was reached in principle, the two parties have been exchanging documents to finalise the minor issues that were left to be cleared up. The bulk of the agreement, however, is now a reality. Barça's legal team and the player's camp have been in permanent contact to draw up the new contract, that will link Gavi to Camp Nou for another four years, until 2026. In fact, the extension can already be considered done and now all that is left is to revise the text on the document, which should be done on Monday or Tuesday to allow for an official announcement as soon as this week. However, from there it will all depend on the agenda of the president, Joan Laporta, and the player to be able to carry out the signing event. The format of said event is still not definite and, in part, it will be dependent on what the player decides.
