Malcolm Ebiowei ‘over the moon’ as Palace confirm signing of Man Utd-linked teenager

Malcolm Ebiowei says he is ‘over the moon’ after Crystal Palace announced his transfer from Derby County. The right winger became a target for Premier League clubs recently amid Derby’s financial problems and his expiring contract, which ran out on Thursday. Manchester United were among the top-flight clubs linked with his signature. But on June 22, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano revealed Ebiowei had reject United’s advances. Instead, his transfer hopes relied on Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace. And those dreams have now been realised, with the Eagles announcing his capture on a five-year contract. The 18-year-old, who has represented England at youth level, is one of several players expected to join Palace this summer. Sam Johnstone and Cheick Doucoure are also on the verge of moving to Selhurst Park. Johnstone is a free agent after running down his contract with West Brom, while Doucoure will cost an initial £18million. Reacting to his Palace move, Ebiowei told club media: “I’m delighted, I’m over the moon. “I’m south London born and bred, so it’s a plus for me. “I have seen a lot of players step up from the Championship to the Premier League and get their chance playing, and I was thinking that I would like to take that chance as well. “I’m very excited – a bit nervous but that’s a part of it really. Excited.” Ebiowei clearly wanted to get regular game time, rather than sit on the bench or playing in a reserve team. He is far more likely to get senior appearances for Palace than United, so the transfer makes sense. The wide man wants to follow in the footsteps of Michael Olise and Marc Guehi. They both spent time in the Championship but are now impressing in the top flight. The capture of Ebiowei is yet another sign that Palace are going in the right direction. They had become a bit stale under Roy Hodgson, but now Vieira is directing them into a new, exciting era. With young talents such as Olise, Ebiowei and Ebere Eze in the squad, Palace fans are gearing up for some great years under Vieira. Meanwhile, Palace reportedly have two rivals as they aim to sign Levi Colwill from Chelsea.
