Giving the Dutchman his favorite shirt number might make him feel more at home at Manchester United.
Frenkie de Jong, who is a big target for Manchester United, is nearing an agreement.
The team has been pursuing the Dutchman for almost two months as they look to replenish their midfielder after losing Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic, and Jesse Lingard to free agency. According to The Manchester Evening News, Barcelona and the Manchester club have reached a preliminary agreement.
De Jong wears his favorite number for a unique purpose.
De Jong appears to be headed for United and will be able to don his dream jersey should he make it to Old Trafford, despite rumors that Chelsea may make a late move for him. Throughout his youth, the Dutch international sported a number of shirts.
He wore the numbers 6, 8, 10, 17, and 18 for Ajax under-21s. He wore the jersey numbers 24, 27, and 43 for the first team at Willem II.
But it has been obvious which number he has favoured throughout his professional career. He chose the No. 21 for both the Ajax first squad and the Barcelona team.
2019 transfer deadline day addition De Jong gave an explanation of his decision to wear the jersey. I'm at ease with that figure, he said.
"Every member of my family attended my presentation in Barcelona, with the exception of my father's paternal grandpa, Hans de Jong. On the day of my 21st birthday, he passed away. It is also unintentionally a form of homage. He was an avid football supporter.
With his departure at United 21 this summer, Edinson Cavani vacated the jersey. He took over the shirt after the Premier League granted United special permission to let Cristiano Ronaldo to wear the historic No.7 shirt for the season following his August arrival.
