Manchester United may have been dealt a setback in their pursuit of Frenkie de Jong thanks to Barcelona president Joan Laporta. He asserts that the midfielder is not up for sale by the Blaugrana.

Since Erik ten Hag became manager at Old Trafford, De Jong, 25, has been at the top of the Red Devils' wishlist for transfers.

Laporta appears to have raised doubts about the proposed transfer of the Dutch midfielder, for whom United and Barca have apparently reached an initial agreement of £55 million.

According to a comment from the Barcelona president, provided by Fabrizio Romano:

Not just Man United wants him; several other teams do too. He wants to stay, so we have no intention of selling him. I'll do everything in my power to keep Frenkie, but there is also a pay issue that needs to be resolved.

Since United's interest was originally alleged to exist in May, the transfer speculation has been ongoing. The Premier League team seems to have gained encouragement from the Catalan giants' precarious financial predicament.

De Jong had expressed a desire to stay at Barca, but the La Liga team were eager to get him off the books because of his salary.

Due to Laporta's remarks, it will be assumed that United missed out on the Dutch midfielder. This occurs on the same day when it is rumoured Cristiano Ronaldo informed the team he wants to depart.

Joan Laporta, the president of Barcelona, is Manchester United manipulating?

The possibility that Joan Laporta is attempting to increase Frenkie de Jong's value gives Manchester United supporters hope. The former Ajax player is wanted by the Blaugrana for €85 million (£73.2 million).

Laporta might be attempting to haggle for a better price for his midfielder given that United is said to have agreed to a £70 million agreement that will be paid over time.

If not, Manchester United will be concerned because they have struggled to make a signing during the current window. Cristiano Ronaldo has grown frustrated with the lack of transfer movement, and failing to land their top target will be devastating. De Jong played 45 times for Barcelona last season, contributing five assists and four goals. He presently has four years left on his current contract with the Catalonian powerhouses and has been an important member of Barcelona's lineup since since his 2019 transfer from Ajax.
