Widely mentioned in the conversation of the greatest players in the history of football and sports, Cristiano Ronaldo is a Portuguese forward who plays for Manchester United in England. Known for his amazing goalscoring records and positioning in the box, he is the leading scorer in football history and other major competitions such as the UEFA Champions League and the European Championships. He has featured in Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United from 2003 to 2009, Real Madrid from 2009 to 2018 , Juventus from 2018 to 2021 and a second spell in Manchester United. Rumours of Cristiano Ronaldo pushing for a move from Manchester United has been all over the news after the club failed to meet its standards yet again this season. But has Ronaldo's second spell been a success? Or he was he a part of the reason why Manchester United failed?
Before his move to Manchester United, the red side of Manchester were in great disbelief and grief as it was rumoured that Ronaldo had already agreed a deal with neighbor rivals, Manchester City who have enjoyed far more success in recent times. Few hours later, it was reported that Manchester United have intervened and have come to an agreement with Ronaldo. After 12 years, the legend was coming back for a last dance. From few hours of sorrows, now there was a complete moment of elation in the red side of the City. Hopes were very high as Manchester United had finished 2nd the previous season and had finally gotten Jadon Sancho after 3 years of transfer drama and one of the best centre backs at the time in Raphael Varane.
On his debut, Ronaldo scored a brace against Newcastle to put Manchester United firmly in the 2nd position at that time. It couldn't go downhill after this, could it? Surely, Ole's reds will be crowned champions of England after 9 years, won't they? After all, there cannot be a better script than that. But no, looks like the football gods had their own plans. It didn't just go downhill, it went to the trough, an all time low with Manchester United having their worst Premier League season EVER! . Even Arsenal finished above them and they were relegated to the Europa League. Ronaldo though may have enjoyed a great individual campaign with 18 goals as the third top goalscorer and many individual awards but context matters. It was clear that the attacking fluidity in the Manchester United had been ruined by the 37 year old having very bad effects on players like Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho. In the Champions League, he did not put a foot wrong as he led them in many comebacks which saw them finish 1st in their group. Manchester United may have failed him in the UCL but he also did greatly fail Manchester United in their quest for top 4 at least. He scored 18 but let's not pretend 10 did not come in 4 games; Norwich and Tottenham Hotspur taxes are very real. From December to February, he scored 2 goald in the league and definitely this affected Manchester United's campaign.
The Cristiano fanatics can come at the article all they want. In fact, narrator is also a Cristiano fanatic but if we are to put the biasness aside, neither Cristiano Ronaldo or Manchester United were actually a success last season. Both failed each other and no one owes anyone anything because Cristiano Ronaldo has Manchester United to thank for who he is today. Prime Manchester United too would not be what it is today if it had not been for Cristiano Ronaldo.
