Gretar Steinsson joins Tottenham Hotspur as new performance director

Tottenham Hotspur confirm that former Bolton Wanderers and Iceland right-back Gretar Steinsson has joined the club as their new performance director. Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Gretar Steinsson has joined the club as their new performance director. The 40-year-old was best remembered for his four-year spell at Bolton Wanderers between 2008 and 2012, during which he made 126 Premier League appearances from the right-back area. Steinsson - a 46-cap Iceland international - retired from playing in 2013 and has since worked in various upstairs roles, joining Everton as a scout in 2018. Steinsson was quickly promoted to the Toffees' chief scout in the summer of 2019 before leaving his post in December, as he worked for the Icelandic FA as their technical advisor. The former Iceland defender also represented BSC Young Boys, Kayserispor and AZ Alkmaar during his playing days and took up his first technical role with the latter in 2015. Steinsson spent just two months with AZ before becoming technical director of Fleetwood Town, where he served for over three-and-a-half years ahead of his 2018 switch to Everton. Tottenham confirm appointment of Gretar Steinsson as club’s new performance director

Tottenham have confirmed the appointment of former Iceland international Gretar Steinsson as the club’s new performance director. The 40-year-old former defender had a spell in the Premier League with Bolton Wanderers from 2008-12 and also played for Dutch club AZ Alkmaar. Following his retirement, Steinsson took up a technical director role at Fleetwood and later joined Everton as head of recruitment and development. Steinsson joins Spurs from the Icelandic FA, where he had been working as technical advisor. Tottenham have been busy strengthening Antonio Conte’s squad for next season, with Richarlison signed from Everton in a £60million deal. The Brazilian forward follows goalkeeper Fraser Forster, veteran Croatia international Ivan Perisic and Yves Bissouma into the north London club. Further transfers are expected to follow, with Middlesbrough’s Djed Spence and Barcelona’s Clement Lenglet close to signing. The latter is expected to join on loan for the upcoming season, while Spurs are still haggling over Spence’s fee. Boro want close to £20million for the right-back but Tottenham are willing to offer £15m plus add-ons. There are expected to be exits in north London too, however. Harry Winks appears certain to move on, with Everton and Leeds linked with the England man. Record signing Tanguy Ndombele and fellow midfielder Giovani Lo Celso are also set to leave. Indeed, Spurs have taken the unusual step, for them, of doing their transfer business early. Conte will now get to work with all his signings in pre-season rather than welcome them towards the end of the window. That is clearly a directive from the Tottenham chief in order to make sure his side are firing on all cylinders at the start of the upcoming campaign. The north London side open their Premier League season with a home game against Southampton on August 6.
