Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo shone for MANCHESTER UNITED at Old Trafford.

Cristiano Ronaldo, a renowned player for Manchester United, wants to leave Old Trafford because he believes the club cannot match his ambition. Sounds recognizable? Wayne Rooney, who voiced similar reservations about the club's state while playing for the Red Devils back when Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge, appears to have been replaced by Erik ten Hag.

This summer, Manchester United has been considering selling players like Axel Tuanzebe, Alex Telles, Brandon Williams, Eric Bailly, and Anthony Martial.

But what they weren't prepared for was Ronaldo's desire to end his second stint with the Red Devils after just a year.

The 37-year-desire old's to join a squad competing in the Champions League was revealed over the weekend, sparking links with clubs like Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

The Portugal international, who is approaching the end of his career, is worried that United won't be able to match his ambition.

The situation at Old Trafford is concerning, especially as Ten Hag is ready to take over.

It also evokes Rooney's desire to leave the team in 2010, when Ferguson was the manager.

At the time, United had narrowly lost the championship to Chelsea the year before.

Despite losing Ronaldo to Real Madrid and witnessing Carlos Tevez's contentious departure to Manchester City the summer before, they pushed the Blues all the way.

However, United had a lackluster window despite their desire in players like Franck Ribery, Samuel Eto'o, and Karin Benzema.

They acquired Antonio Valencia, Michael Owen, and Gabriel Obertan despite receiving £80 million from Ronaldo's transfer to Real Madrid.

They then went on to sign Bebe, Javier Hernandez, and Chris Smalling after Chelsea won the title in 2010.

Not exactly the transfer activity that Rooney had anticipated.

He then requested to leave United in October of that same year, citing the club's lack of ambition as the reason for his exit.

He stated, "David Gill did not give me any of the assurances I was seeking concerning the future squad during our meeting last week.

"I then told him I wasn't going to sign a new contract.

"I found Sir Alex's remarks yesterday to be both interesting and surprising.

"As he stated, it is unquestionably true that my agency and I have spoken with the club about a new deal on numerous occasions.

"During those discussions in August, I questioned whether the club would still be able to draw in the best players in the world.

"I've always had nothing but the utmost admiration for MUFC. Given its amazing history, particularly the last six years, in which I have been fortunate to participate, how could I have failed?

"Winning trophies is everything to me, as it has been for the club under Sir Alex. Consequently, I believe the inquiries I was making were justifiable.

"Despite my recent struggles, I am aware of the enormous debt I will always have to Sir Alex Ferguson. Since the day he acquired me from Everton when I was only 18 years old, he has been a fantastic manager and mentor who has assisted and encouraged me.

I wish he could continue forever for Manchester United because he is a unique and genius.

Rooney made a U-turn but decided to stay.

Unfortunately, Ronaldo is proof that history is repeating itself 12 years later.

The Portuguese international is still as eager as ever to win trophies because his team's sixth-place result in the Premier League last season prevented it from happening.

And given that United has had a quiet summer thus far, it seems that his present stance is appropriate.

The Red Devils are interested in a variety of players, but despite this, they have been frighteningly slow to bolster their roster.

The fact that the most important player in international football is criticizing the goals of the largest club in the nation is a scathing and worrisome assessment of where United are at.

And there's a theory that Ronaldo will have a better chance of winning the award if he departs.
