GES SUMMONS STRIKING TEACHER UNIONS

The leadership of the teacher unions that have announced their resignation from service have been invited to a meeting by the Ghana Education Service (GES).

To "address the progress and the way forward," a meeting has been scheduled.

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers-Ghana (CCT-G) are four pre-tertiary teacher unions that went on strike on Monday, July 4, accusing the government of ignoring their demand for a 20 percent cost of living allowance (COLA).

The professors announced this last month, setting Thursday, June 30 as the deadline.

The GES said it learned of the teachers' strike action via the media in a statement released by Cassandra Twum Ampofo, its Head of Public Relations.

However, in addition to asking them to the meeting, Management has instructed senior high school heads to mobilize their management teams through the Regional and District Directors of Education "to protect the safety and wellness of all students in schools."

Regional and District Directors have additionally been told to make sure that Basic School Heads maintain schools open and closely monitor all students who report to school in the interim between subsequent orders from GES Management.

Parents have been told to keep quiet.

Management will provide advice on the best course of action after closely monitoring the situation.

We would want to let the rank and file of our members know that GNAT and the other teacher unions have declared an indefinite strike over COLA as of today, July 4, 2022. Therefore, it is advisable that you avoid going to work until you hear from your union representatives.

General Secretary Thomas T. Musah

All supervisors at the pretertiary level are required to stay in their positions until all the people they supervise—students and teachers—have gone. The school can then be shut down. Your teachers have a right to strike under the law. You can still decide to close the school when students arrive but no teachers are present since you cannot manage all the students on your own.
