Journalist claims left-footer Spurs are keen on is ‘set to sign’ for another club for £17m

Photo by Gualter Fatia/Getty Images David Carmo has long been linked with a move to England, but it appears as though the Braga defender will be staying in Portugal for a little while yet. Indeed, according to Fabrizio Romano, the centre-back is set to sign for Porto in a deal worth around €20m (£17m), despite ongoing links to both Tottenham and Liverpool. This content could not be loaded See more Carmo is set to stay in his home country, and we can’t help but feel that Spurs have missed a trick here. The centre-back would have been a brilliant fit in Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3 system, and he really could have been the new voice that Tottenham have been needing in their defence for some time. The 22-year-old may only be young, but he’s already been earmarked as a brilliant leader, with one of his coaches even comparing him to Sergio Ramos. “He is a player with a voice. He knows what he has to do on the pitch. I remember that at the beginning he was an introvert, but he was young. In the under-23s, he was already admired for being a leader and for everything he had achieved,” Carmo’s youth coach said. “He is one of those players who creates a good atmosphere in the dressing room. He may not yet be as charismatic as Sergio Ramos, but he could be with age.” Standing at 6ft 5, Carmo could have been one of the Premier League’s most imposing defenders, and at just 22, he still has room to develop as a player. As a left-footer, he would have been the perfect replacement for Ben Davies in Spurs’ backline, but unfortunately, he’s headed to the Portuguese champions. Perhaps we’ll still see Carmo in the Premier League one day, but that day may be a few years away yet. Here, Sportsmail takes a look at who could be the next big names to emerge from Portugal's talent factory.
