Former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo 'close' to landing next manager job
Former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo is reportedly close to landing his next managerial job. The Portuguese coach arrived at Molineux in 2017 and had an instant impact as his side stormed to the Championship title and guided Wolves back to the Premier League. In the club’s first season in the top-flight, the former Porto boss steered the team to a seventh-place finish in 2019 and secured a Europa League spot, as well as reaching Wembley in the FA Cup semi-finals. That was Wolves ’ highest league finish since 1980 and the first time the club had earned European football since 1981. The following campaign, Espirtio Santo ’s side replicated their league position and reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League, before being knocked out by eventual champions Sevilla. It was announced two days before the end of the season that Espirito Santo was set to leave the club by “mutual consent”, bringing an end to his four-year spell in charge. Having been out of work since being sacked by Tottenham Hotspur in November 2021, it has been reported that Espirito Santo is nearing a return to management. French outlet Foot Mercato has claimed that the ex-Wolves boss is “close to signing” a contract with Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad. Shortly after leaving Molineux, the 48-year-old was appointed as head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, though was given less than five months in charge before being replaced by Antonio Conte. Espirito Santo had won the Manager of the Month award in August but oversaw a total of 17 matches in all competitions, including just 10 Premier League games. READ NEXT:

© Bradley Collyer/PA Nuno during his time at Wolves Former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Nuno Espirito Santo has completed a shock move to become the manager of Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad. The Portuguese coach was appointed as Wolves boss 2017 and enjoyed instant success as his side cruised to the Championship title and took Wolves back to the Premier League. In the club’s first season in the top-flight, the former Porto chief guided his team to a seventh place finish in 2019 whilst also securing a Europa League spot. However, Nuno failed to maintain this momentum and in 2021 it was announced that he departed the club by 'mutual consent'. The former goalkeeper then pursued other vacant roles within the Premier League and was heavily linked with Everton and Crystal Palace at the time but eventually took charge at Tottenham Hotspur. He failed to replicate the same success in North London that he had in the Midlands, though, and was sacked from the role just five months after taking charge.
