Teachers on strike: Savannah RCC considers hiring outside help.

Teacher unions demand a 20% cost-of-living allowance.

The government fails to meet teacher union demands.

Teachers' unions have declared an indefinite strike.

The Savannah Regional Minister, Saeed Muhazu Jibril, has stated that the Regional Coordinating Council will do everything possible to ensure that the four teacher unions' strike does not disrupt academic activities in the region.

The Ghana National Association of Teachers, the National Association of Graduate Teachers, the Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana, and the Teachers and Educational Workers Union have begun a nationwide strike action, which will last until Monday, June 4, 2021.

The strike has resulted in the withdrawal of services by teaching and non-teaching staff in all pre-tertiary institutions across the country due to the government's failure to pay their members a 20% Cost of Living Allowance, according to the unions.

Responding to the headmistress of Damongo Senior High School's complaint about difficulties with her kitchen staff as a result of the strike, Saeed Muhazu Jibril stated that the RCC is willing to intervene to save the situation.

"Whatever assistance you want us to provide while you are caring for them, we can see if there is a need for us to look for some hands or some labor to assist you, that is what we have to do," the Savannah Regional Minister said at Damongo Senior High School.

Aluba Mercy Ewuntomah, the headmistress of Damongo SHS, says preliminary measures are being put in place to manage the situation.

"The school management is currently on post with other volunteer teachers who are not members of unions," Mrs. Ewuntomah is quoted as saying by citinewsroom.com.

She did, however, mention that the school is having difficulty feeding the students.

"My matron has just come to complain that they can't do supper," she explained.

Meanwhile, despite the strike announcement, the Ghana Education Service has ordered that all schools remain open.
