"His fans had the audacity to talk about Messi's wages", "Money and jealousy are his driving factors" - Manchester United fans slam 'horrible' Cristiano Ronaldo's reaction to reported 25% pay cut
According to Samuel Luckhurst of The Athletic (via Utd Report), a 25% cut in player salary resulted from United's inability to advance to the UEFA Champions League for the upcoming season. According to the article, Ronaldo has been "upset" by the pay cut even though he will still make about £360,000 per week next season.
The Portuguese are reportedly planning to leave Old Trafford this summer, according to a separate story from The Athletic. According to David Ornstein, Ronaldo has asked Manchester United to let him leave if a good deal comes through, and Chelsea is considering a move to sign him.
Football fans did not take well to the update on the 37-year-response old's to the pay cut.
Many others expressed their annoyance on Twitter, with one commenting simply:
"Worst individual ever."
Another user mocked the supporters of Cristiano Ronaldo who questioned Lionel Messi for his Barcelona salary by tweeting:
"And then his followers had the gall to discuss Messi's compensation with Barcelona."
One criticized Ronaldo for putting money before winning titles and said it was not why he joined Manchester United, tweeting:
"The motivations for his decision to leave United are money and resentment. not "to win," "a fresh task," etc."
One supporter jokingly wrote:
Oh no, how is he going to live.
Here are a few additional responses to the update:
Yesterday, Manchester United welcomed back most of its senior players following a break (July 4). Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes, Raphael Varane, and Fred, among others, made their first appearances for the team since the conclusion of the previous season.
The greatest absentee from the entire event was Cristiano Ronaldo, who also skipped today's (July 5) training session. Ronaldo has given his absence to family obligations.
Whether the Portuguese forward will accompany the team on its preseason tour to Thailand and Australia on July 8 is currently unknown, he continued.
One of Manchester United's top players last season was Cristiano Ronaldo. In 38 games across all competitions, he scored 24 goals, and he even took home the Player of the Year honor.
But United's efforts were mostly in vain as they ended sixth in the Premier League with their lowest-ever number of points (57 points). In addition, they were eliminated early from the UEFA Champions League, EFL Cup, and FA Cup.
