Ghana going to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for support has got several Ghanaians talking and a very popular lecturer at the University of Ghana has also added his voice to it.
Professor Ebo Turkson on JoyNews' PM Express told the government led by President Akufo Addo to reduce the number of his cabinet ministers. He said, if the government reduces his ministers to 70 and make some radical changes in the executive things will be clear that Ghanaians do not need to go to IMF and Ghanaians will accept whatever that happens.
He suggested the above solution because he thinks, when it comes to sacrificing to fix the country, most times it falls on the ordinary Ghanaian and not the political class. So it is high time the politicians have sacrificed to solve problems in the country.
He said, "If the President announces a cut in his Ministers of State; drops the number down to about 70 and announces some very radical revenue measures from the executive and Ghanaians see that happening, Ghanaians would accept."
He also added that, Ghanaians do not need these numerous Members of Parliament to be agent of change besides Ghanaians already have a local government system that is working. They should go to Parliament and make laws. The Members of Parliament should not be more than 100.
Professor Turkson explained that, “We do not need to increase Parliament. If anything at all, Ghanaians will come to a firm decision that we do not need more than 100 members of Parliament in Ghana because we have a local government system that are causing change in our respective districts."
He also added that, the Members of Parliament should go to Parliament and make laws for the country just like normal Ghanaians go to their work places to work because we don't need them to be agent of change.
The associate Professor at the University of Ghana also added that, "We don’t need our Members of Parliament to be agents of development, they should be lawmakers and they should go to Parliament to go and make laws for Ghana and serve the country like any other Ghanaian worker is doing."
Prof Ebo Turkson said that, if the government is able to make these things happen, Ghanaians will accept it and they will not even be bothered if their salaries are increased or reduced. Also there wouldn't be any need to go to IMF for bailout.
