Memphis Depay departed Manchester United in 2017, but as he approaches the end of his Barcelona deal, the Dutch international has been linked with a comeback to the Premier League.
The reasons behind Memphis Depay's departure from Manchester United back in 2017 may no longer be relevant as he is still being linked with a return to English football.
Jose Mourinho, the manager of United at the time, indicated that Memphis' departure was influenced by the heated competition for positions at the team. The Dutch international left for Lyon in 2017, but following an impressive goal scoring record with the French club, he transferred to Barcelona in 2021.
Ferran Torres, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and other possible additions have improved Barcelona's offensive line for 2022. As a result, Xavi's squad might have to let go of a player who only has one year left on his contract, albeit they are eager to find a successor before authorizing any sales.
Memphis made 53 appearances after moving to United in a high-profile transfer from PSV Eindhoven, but only managed to score seven goals. The majority of those contests were played when Louis van Gaal was still in charge, and Mourinho allowed him to leave after only 18 months while also incorporating a buy-back clause that the English club never used.
The Dutchman gained attention for several of his off-field theatrics, including coming up to training in a Rolls-Royce.That, according to Mourinho, had nothing to do with his choice to authorize the deal.
In 2017, Mourinho remarked, "He was a terrific professional. If somebody thinks he didn't work because he wasn't a great professional, they are completely mistaken." "One issue is when someone snaps a photo of him in an outstanding car or dressed in a particular way, but the photo is wholly inaccurate.
The Dutch forward's departure from Barcelona has been suggested.
The manager continued, "I only have positive things to say about him. The guy is a terrific professional, he's a youngster who respected everyone, he wanted to work, was upset because he was not having that, but I only have good things to say about him." "If I can find any justification at all, it would be that he plays in the single position where we overbook players.
"He's a winger, and we have more wingers than anyone else, so that's the position where it's harder to get chances and where it's harder to be the next choice because we never have issues there. We have Lingard, Mkhitaryan, Mata, Ashley Young, Martial, and Rashford; yet, this is a position where we struggle to rotate players.
Only two of the six more players mentioned by Mourinho—Martial and Rashford—remain with the team. Young moved for Inter Milan in 2020, Mkhitaryan joined Arsenal in a trade for Alexis Sanchez, Lingard and Mata both stayed for one season.
Memphis, like Martial, would also be a possibility in an out wide position after honing his skills in France and Spain. Due to the close-season departure of Edinson Cavani and the uncertainty surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo's future, United also have less choices in the center of the field and are still being connected to potential acquisitions in attack.
