The Africa Cup of Nations, which was slated to take place in June of next year, has been postponed by the Confederation of African Football. Patrice Tihopane, president of the CAF, announced this. Weather concerns were one of the justifications provided for this postponement. The majority of west African nations, including Cote D'Ivoire, have their heaviest rainfall between June and July.
The African Cup of Nations has historically been held in January and February. There were worries that disagreements over the release of players for the competition existed at the time between international clubs and national teams. The majority of the time, that is when the league heats up to the point that every player is required for the match.
Despite the tournament being shifted back to January, the CAF secretary for February said there are no intentions to relocate it permanently from June to July due to the disparate weather patterns across the continent.
If the AFCON had been set in January or February 2023 knowing that the world would be played in November and December this year, there would have been a lot going on in the African football calendar from November to February. That might be one of the reasons why the competition was postponed from early 2019 until 2024.
