According to Dr. John Kwakye, the director of research at the Institute of Economic Affairs, the Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta shouldn't be fired.

He believes that dismissing the Minister will harm Ghana's standing in the eyes of the world.

You may recall that former president John Dramani Mahama demanded the removal of vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia from his position as the head of the Economic Management Team (EMT) because of his failure after the announcement on Friday, July 1, that the Akufo-Addo administration would be visiting the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

In addition, Mr. Mahama stated that Ken Ofori-Atta cannot and should not be a member of the team of negotiators for the negotiations with the IMF since he oversaw the tragic collapse of the economy.

In a statement on Saturday, July 2, Mr. Mahama stated, "The Finance Minister who has presided over the calamitous collapse of the economy cannot and should not be part of the team of negotiators. We applaud the Akufo-Ado administration's decision to go to the IMF. He no longer commands the respect and confidence of those who are involved in our economy. President Akufo-Addo has to make the brave choice to appoint a new finance minister right away who is capable and confident enough to work diligently to improve our nearly dismal position.

Additionally, in order for the President to reassemble the Economic Management Team, the Vice President must be dismissed of his duties as the team's chair due to his clear failings.

We must learn from this experience and refrain from using the economy for political gain; doing so would only result in the same tragic results that have led us to this point, Mr. Mahama said on Facebook on Saturday, July 2.

However, Dr. John Kwakye expressed his disagreement with such ideas on Wednesday, July 6, at the #3businesscolloquium hosted by Media General.

He should be there, he added, since removing him at this time would damage Ghana's reputation abroad.
