In the four months before the World Cup, the Ghana national team has added five new players to Qatar.

Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey has played for England Under-21s, Hamburger SV Stephan Ambrosius and Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer have both represented Germany Under-21s and Athletic Bilbao striker Iñaki Williams played for Spain in one friendly match, where he was born, and six years ago. Another German-based player, Patric Pfeiffer, is a full-back in Darmstadt.

The Ghana Football Association said on Wednesday that all five had changed their nationality to represent the African country.

"This follows a full consultation between the leadership (federation), the players and their parents over the past few months," the Ghana Football Association said in a statement.

FIFA eligibility rules allow countries to hire players from their home countries under certain circumstances. Players are allowed to change their allegiance to the new national team if they have never played a competitive first-round match that they deserve to hurt.

Ghana have won their fourth World Cup, and for the first time since 2014, by knocking out Nigeria in a two-legged qualifier in March.

Coach Otto Addo's team has been included in the World Cup squad with Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay.

Uruguay's match will be a repeat of the 2010 World Cup quarterfinals in South Africa where Ghana were denied a late goal by Luis Suárez's handball, missed the next penalty, and lost a penalty kick.
