Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, the energy minister, has challenged the $34 million price tag for moving the Ameri facility to the Ashanti Region.

The Energy Minister stated the reported sum is incorrect since discussions are still going on when he appeared before Parliament on Friday.

"Mr. Speaker, although I can provide a breakdown, the clearest response I can offer is that it is currently unknown because no contract has been signed. Ameri's move will cost an amount that has not yet been determined. On the House floor, he stated, "We are still in negotiations with the Volta River Authority and the Ministry of Energy.

The minority in Parliament claimed that moving the embassy would cost the state $34 million. Edward Bawa, a member of the Parliament's Energy Committee, claimed that the sum was made public after the Mines and Energy Committee met with a number of organisations involved in the Mines and Energy industry over the weekend.

John Abdulai Jinapor, the ranking member of Parliament's Energy Committee, has also demanded that the Volta River Authority (VRA) be given control over the relocation of the Ameri facility.

Speaking on JoyNews' PM Express on Thursday, he said that giving the plant to the foreign corporation Mytilineos would be detrimental to the nation and that such a scheme should be scrapped.

"We are fully aware that the six-year agreement has ended. The factory has been compensated thanks to the BOOT agreement. In terms of usable life, it has 20 more years of capacity. We could make 700 million throughout the course of the project, based on the Minister's even more modest estimate of 35 million.

"I wish we had anticipated that after we finish or run the BOOT the plant must go to VRA. VRA has the capacity. It ran T1, T2, KTPP, it ran the Tema plant, it ran several other plants, and given that their expertise is within the GE plant - and this is a GE plant, a General Electric plant - I would wish we had anticipated that.

Therefore, before you take any action, go back and give the plant to VRA so that they can profit. They will decide how to proceed once they get ownership of the plant, he added.
