The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Wednesday, 6 July 2022, approved the first batch of 45 buses out of 100 VDL Intercity buses purchased for use by Metro Mass Transit. Ltd.
Speaking at the event, President Akufo-Addo said the event was especially important as it gave the country an opportunity to expand the capacity of the public transport system.
According to the President, “the existence of an efficient transport system is an important factor in economic growth, and, as President of the Republic, I have made it a priority to re-introduce the Metro Mass Transport system across the region. investment in sustainable investment in infrastructure and services. ”

In addition to this, the President noted that technical assistance, in the form of a grant from the Government of Belgium, is also provided to cover pilot and end-of-life training, as well as support for the company's operations.
Expressing gratitude to the Belgian Government for providing both financial and technical assistance to the bus, President Akufo-Addo noted that the Republic of Ghana and the Belgian Government have a long-standing relationship, which has transformed into a more strategic partnership. important economic sectors, especially in the road transport sector.
In fact, under the administration of the 2nd President of the 4th Republic, that prominent Ghanaian leader, His Excellency John Agyekum Kufuor, five hundred and thirteen (513) VDL buses were provided to Metro Mass Transit Ltd. with permit funds from the Belgian Government.
“I am informed that the Government of Belgium also extends to fund the purchase of fifty (50) buses annually for the next five (5) years for the development of company vessels. This is the right time, and I urge all players to work hard, as we want to fully improve the performance of MMTL, ”he said.
Echoing the words of the Minister of Transport, President Akufo-Addo lamented the neglect and mismanagement of public property, which, unfortunately, eroded Ghana's social fabric, and signaled greater repression of national resources.
“I therefore urge the Board and management to take steps to ensure that the buses I am sending today are timely. It is good to see that Metro Mass Transit Ltd is restoring its status as an important public transport company, dedicated to the people of Ghana, ”he added.
