Lionel Messi has confirmed that he will not play for Liverpool, Manchester City, or Tottenham Hotspur.

Manchester City and two of their rivals have previously been linked with a move for Lionel Messi, but Danny Mills believes he would not fit into Pep Guardiola's side.

Lionel Messi would struggle to get a start for any of the top three Premier League clubs, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Tottenham Hotspur.

Former England international Danny Mills believes the Argentine icon has suffered a sharp decline over the last season. Despite that, Mills believes Messi is the greatest footballer he has ever seen, surpassing wantaway Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi struggled in his first season at Paris Saint-Germain, scoring six Ligue 1 goals in 25 games. He did, however, win the Premier League title, adding another trophy to his collection. The French giants, on the other hand, failed to win the Coupe de France and the Champions League, exiting in the last-16 stages of both competitions.

When asked if Messi would be able to play for a top Premier League team, Mills told the Liverpool Echo: "He is, in my opinion, the greatest footballer I have ever seen. I never saw [Johan] Cruyff or [Diego] Maradona live. Messi is the most talented footballer I've ever seen.

"I know Ronaldo's numbers are slightly better, and he's more of a big-game player and all of that, but Messi is the best pure footballer. But, would you want Messi on your team right now? Most likely not.

"We're talking Premier League here, aren't we? Liverpool would not sign him, City would not sign him, and Tottenham would not sign him. No way, I don't think so."

Liverpool has made three summer signings, including Messi, according to Mills. Fabio Carvalho joined Fulham on a free transfer, Darwin Nunez joined from Benfica in a £65 million deal, and Calvin Ramsay joined from Aberdeen. The Reds' transfer business is expected to come to an end with Jurgen Klopp willing to wait until 2023 to strengthen his midfield despite being linked with moves for Youri Tielemans and Jude Bellingham.

Meanwhile, in the transfer window, City completed the big-money signing of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund. Julian Alvarez has joined from River Plate, while Stefan Ortega has joined from Arminia Bielefeld to bolster their goalkeeping options. Kalvin Phillips, 26, became their most recent signing after leaving Leeds.

Tottenham have had an equally hectic start to the summer, with Antonio Conte eager to bolster his squad ahead of the season opener against Southampton. Yves Bissouma, Fraser Forster, Ivan Perisic, and Richarlison have all joined the North London club as they seek trophies next season.
