Ronaldo to Chelsea transfer backed as Sterling warning dealt to Manchester City
When Todd Boehly, the temporary sporting director and new Chelsea owner, recently met with Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes, numerous players were mentioned, including Ronaldo's client. Following the team's failure to qualify for UEFA Champions League football for the upcoming season, Ronaldo is believed to be open to quitting Man United in the upcoming weeks. The Portugal international has been linked to Chelsea as a potential destination. However, rumors claim that Thomas Tuchel must still approve the plan before the 37-year-old can move to Stamford Bridge.
Merson believes there is a potential Ronaldo will leave Manchester this summer in order to play Champions League football in his Sky Sports column. He declared: "I think he might be inclined to quit the way things are going right now.
"He wants to play in the Champions League, and we've heard that, so I believe it will happen. If he does leave, I think everyone will benefit. Since the season is just around four or five weeks away, I believe it needs to be resolved sooner rather than later.
"When you learn that he wants to play in the Champions League, it's a little depressing. Man United won't play in the Champions League for a very long time, that much is obvious. I'm not sure why this wasn't stopped in its tracks sooner. It has to go on like this for so long. If I were a fan of Man Utd, I might be a little dissatisfied.
"Particularly in the best and toughest league in the world, it is difficult to find center-forwards who can score goals. Man United don't really have a successor for Ronaldo as a proven goal scorer who will net you 15 to 20 goals, therefore if he were to leave the club. Therefore, they would need to go look for someone."
Sterling, in the opinion of Merson, would be much missed by the Premier League champions. He stated: "Sterling seems like a fantastic addition.
"Given how many goals you're selling, I would be concerned if Man City sold Sterling. People frequently approach me and say, "He's constantly at the far post typing them in." He isn't shoving anyone out of the way to achieve his objectives.
"There is an art to what he does, and if he departs Man City for another team, it will be a huge loss. A top-notch international football player who plays for one of the best teams in the world would be a significant signing for Chelsea, in my opinion, if they went after him."
